The road for LIV Golf players to return remains under construction

The end of LIV Golf is to be sorted out in a New Jersey bankruptcy court with the next hearing in just over two weeks. The future of LIV players could be even more complex, with so much to be determined 900 miles away at PGA Tour headquarters in Florida. PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp previously scheduled a virtual news conference Nov. 17, the day after a board meeting. The topic is to be more details of the new competitive model for 2028, not how, when or why to bring back players from LIV. So how long Jon Rahm's only option is the European tour or what becomes of Bryson DeChambeau are topics not likely to be discussed, much less decided. Rolapp is big on meritocracy, and Adam Scott offered thoughts along those lines in Abu Dhabi. “I think the fairest thing is that they all re-establish themselves in the system they want to go to,” he said in an interview with Today's Golfer. “They left and gave up those privileges. I think they should re-qualify themselves, ideally. That's how I would see it. That seems logical and sensible.” Rolapp has not been willing to discuss the return of LIV players until they are relieved of their contracts. LIV said Wednesday in a bankruptcy hearing it would not go forward with a new version and instead begin the process of shuttering operations. The same day, the judge approved Rahm's separation from LIV Golf. He's officially free and clear. “I have yet to have a discussion with the PGA Tour to see if there’s any path back for next year,” Rahm said this week in Abu Dhabi, where he shares the 36-hole lead. Free, indeed. The last public comments from DeChambeau came in a “Figuring Out” podcast released on Halloween in which the two-time U.S. Open champion remained bullish on LIV 2.0. “It’s going to be done right and this is going to be a league that exists hopefully forever,” he said. Rahm and DeChambeau are the two biggest names. Often overlooked is Dustin Johnson, a former world No. 1 and two-time major champion and the one guy PGA Tour players said they missed. His manager, David Winkle at Hambric Sports, said Friday the 42-year-old Johnson has been testing equipment and is “hungry to play against the best competition available to him.” Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton, a four-time Ryder Cup player, have status on the European tour. DeChambeau and Cameron Smith, who won the British Open at St. Andrews in 2022, also have access to membership as major champions in the last five years. They must decide in the next 10 days. For so many others, it's a waiting game. The path to the PGA Tour The tour currently has a one-year ban from a player's last LIV appearance, so that would be lifted on Aug. 24, 2027, assuming there are no other disciplinary matters. That could include being part of the group that sued the tour. Where it gets complicated is the move to the new model in 2028. The categories for the Championship Series and the lower Challenger Series no longer include past champions — LIV had 28 players who have won on the PGA Tour. There is a one-time exemption for top 50 in career money. Charles Howell III is currently at No. 42 with some breathing room. But to use that exemption requires 15 starts in 2027, and Howell won’t be eligible next year. There also is no mention of life members for 20 career wins — Johnson achieved that before going to LIV. And while Rolapp has noted he wasn't around when players bolted from the PGA Tour to take the Saudi riches, he still reports to a wide membership, many of whom want to see defectors punished. “There are 225 guys with tour cards,” Xander Schauffele said. “And if you sat down and interviewed all of them, you’re going to get probably three or four boxes of how guys feel. Some guys don’t care, some guys are really ticked off, some guys want them to have a huge fine, some guys would let them back tomorrow.” The path to the European tour Hatton and Victor Perez have status in Europe from having won elite Rolex Series events. Adrian Meronk and Laurie Canter have status from winning tournaments with at least a $2 million prize fund, and lower down the priority list are David Puig and Elvis Smylie, who won tournaments with small purses. The top 40 in career money, another category, is where to find the likes of Louis Oosthuizen, Sergio Garcia, Martin Kaymer and Paul Casey. The European tour is making available sponsor exemptions to LIV players in run-of-the-mill events that wouldn’t squeeze out loyal members. The path through the European tour With two tournaments left in the season, three former LIV players are in position to be among the leading 10 players in the Race to Dubai who get PGA Tour cards — Eugenio Chacarra, Patrick Reed and Bernd Wiesberger. That seems like the prudent path — right now. Still to be determined is the outcome of a new PGA Tour alliance with the European tour that created that program. Early indications are there won't be that many cards offered for 2028.

Adamson locks No. 3 seed in SSL quarterfinals

MANILA, Philippines — Adamson University bucked a slow start to defeat College of Saint Benilde, 26-24, 25-15, 25-21, and secure the No. 3 seed in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Shakey’s Super League (SSL) Unity Cup on Saturday at the Playtime FilOil Centre in San Juan. Main gunner Shaina Nitura returned from a three-game absence, providing leadership and stability as the Lady Falcons closed the Round of 8 on a winning note after dropping their first two assignments in Pool E. Adamson rallied from an eight-point deficit in the opening set with a telling 11-2 run to gain control and steal the extended frame. The previous edition’s fourth-placed team then dictated the pace for the rest of the match to complete the 79-minute sweep. The Lady Falcons will take on the twice-to-beat No. 2 seed from Pool F in the quarterfinals of the league’s centerpiece competition, backed by Shakey’s Pizza Parlor, Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken, Potato Corner, and R&B Milk Tea, starting November 14. Frances Mordi led Adamson with 11 points on nine kills, one kill block and one ace while Third Tuddao scored eight. “Although it was a slow start, I remembered what coach was telling us before the game, that we should learn to adjust,” Mordi said. “During the game, at the start, it was very slow but at the end we were able to adjust based on what coach told us,” she added. Nitura, who only played her second game in the tournament, came off the bench and scored six of her seven points on attacks for the Lady Falcons, who hosted a block party with 11 kill blocks. Lana Barrera had seven points, Joy Aseo and Kim Rocha finished with six points each while Frisha Divinagracia got four of her five markers on kill blocks for Adamson. The Lady Falcons fell into a 6-14 hole in the first set after Lady Blazer winger Ash Lleses scored on an off-speed attack. Adamson mounted a blistering counterattack and took a 17-16 lead after an Eloi Dote kill. Aseo put Adamson at set point, 24-22, but CSB forced an extended set with back-to-back points. Dote’s runner gave the Lady Falcons a set point advantage before Rocha ended the frame with a kill block. The Lady Falcons sustained the momentum of their first set comeback to send the Lady Blazers into a three-game losing skid in the competition supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, the Commission on Higher Education, Mikasa, Asics, Rigour Technology, Jersey Haven, Solar Sports and 12 Beyond Production as technical partners. CSB will take on twice-to-beat University of Santo Tomas in the next round. Grace Borromeo led the Lady Blazers with 10 points on eight kills and two aces, Arianna Pua scored eight while Camila Bartolome finished with seven markers. All games in the competition are available live and on demand via PusoP.com and Solar Sports. In the second game, University of Santo Tomas swept the Round of 8 with a quick win over Letran, 25-11, 25-19, 25-21. Veteran hitter Regina scored 16 points, including eight in the third frame, to lead the Golden Tigresses to a 3-0 finish in Pool F and build momentum heading into next week's quarterfinals. The top-seeded twice-to-beat UST tackles Pool E No. 4 seed College of Saint Benilde in the quarters slated to begin on November 14. Jurado kept the Tigresses together in the tight third set and delivered crucial back-to-back kills to put UST at matchpoint, 24-21, after the Lady Knights closed in to within one. Erica Gutierrez finished off the reigning NCAA champion with a down the line kill. “Isa sa mga nire-remind ko sa teammates ko and for me is ‘yung kalmahan lang talaga lalo kapag crucial moments,” said Jurado, who had 13 kills and three kill blocks. “I think, based on previous games and previous experiences, mas nara-rattle and mas naninigas kami, kaya it’s very important na at least may mag-remind kahit na not from me but other teammates as well, na mag-relax at maging kalmado. In that way, mas makakapag-isip kami kung paano manalo ng maayos,” she added. Avril Bron added seven points while Angge Poyos and Diza Berayo had six markers each for the Tigresses, who had 42 attacks, nine kill blocks and landed six aces. Letran dropped its second game in three outings despite the 11-point effort of Judiel Nitura. Nizelle Martin and Sheena Sarie got six and five points, respectively, for the Lady Knights. Letran will wait for the result of the Ateneo De Manila University and University of the Philippines clash, still being played as of press time, to determine its quarters placing. TMT

Cavaliers beat 76ers, 119-95

CLEVELAND — LeBron James got a warm reception from Northeast Ohio fans when he was the last of the Philadelphia 76ers' starters introduced before Friday night's game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. That was the only highlight for James, who scored in single digits for only the 10th time in 1,630 NBA regular-season games. James was held to eight points as the Cavaliers routed the 76ers 119-95 in an NBA Cup group stage game. The Akron, Ohio, native - who elected to sign with Philadelphia in the offseason instead of returning to Cleveland for a third stint - was 3 of 12 from the field, including 0 for 4 on 3-pointers, and committed six turnovers in 31 minutes. "Definitely not feeling a good rhythm offensively,” said James, who came out with 3:54 remaining and the 76ers trailing by 19 points. "We didn’t look like much offensively. We had a couple spurts, but too many turnovers on my behalf.” James received a smattering of boos from Cavaliers fans every time he touched the ball during the first half. There was no video tribute to James, a surprising omission from recent years. Last season, the Cavaliers showed highlights of James scoring 25 straight points during Game 5 of the 2007 Eastern Conference finals against the Detroit Pistons, which prompted him to tear up. The Cavaliers have often showed clips of Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals - when Cleveland won its first championship - or when James was the first overall pick in the 2003 draft. James spent 11 seasons over two stints with the Cavs. He left as a free agent in 2010 to join the Miami Heat, came back in 2014 and departed again in 2018 to join the Los Angeles Lakers. "At the end of the day, nothing can get as worse as December 2, 2010, from a reception standpoint. So I’ve seen them near the depths of hell when it comes to reception here all the way to the heavens above. So anything in between, it’s easy money,” James said. James missed his first two shots from beyond the arc before scoring on a driving layup with 6:37 remaining in the first quarter. Cleveland center Evan Mobley, who had 22 points, said a major emphasis coming into the game was protecting the paint. James was 2 of 6 in the paint. Donovan Mitchell, who led the Cavs with 23 points along with seven rebounds and eight assists, was happy with his team's defensive mentality. "He’s a hell of a player, but like Evan said, just trying to pack the paint and knowing that he’s trying to drive but also kick it out. He had six turnovers and you give credit where it’s due to our defense as a whole. And from there we were able to get out and get going,” Mitchell said. James had his double-digit points streak in Cleveland snapped at 396 games. The NBA’s career scoring leader had three points on Dec. 30, 2004, against Houston. His NBA-record run of 1,297 consecutive regular-season games with at least 10 points ended on Dec. 4 last season in the Lakers’ victory at Toronto. The 76ers' loss was James’ second-worst in Cleveland as a visiting player. He is 9-5, but has been on the losing end in his last three trips. Philadelphia will return to Cleveland on March 1. The Sixers came in with the NBA's best record but fell to 8-2. Coach Nick Nurse was already looking ahead to Sunday's game at Chicago. "We were lackluster and they were very, very good. And I think we expected them to be very good tonight considering that they had a couple tough losses in a row. They had us and New York coming to town (on Saturday). They had to dig in and they did,” Nurse said. "We were not very good. Probably once in a while that’s going to happen. Important thing is that we get over it and bounce back on Sunday.”
