The road for LIV Golf players to return remains under construction

Manila Times - Nov 7, 2026

The end of LIV Golf is to be sorted out in a New Jersey bankruptcy court with the next hearing in just over two weeks. The future of LIV players could be even more complex, with so much to be determined 900 miles away at PGA Tour headquarters in Florida. PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp previously scheduled a virtual news conference Nov. 17, the day after a board meeting. The topic is to be more details of the new competitive model for 2028, not how, when or why to bring back players from LIV. So how long Jon Rahm's only option is the European tour or what becomes of Bryson DeChambeau are topics not likely to be discussed, much less decided. Rolapp is big on meritocracy, and Adam Scott offered thoughts along those lines in Abu Dhabi. “I think the fairest thing is that they all re-establish themselves in the system they want to go to,” he said in an interview with Today's Golfer. “They left and gave up those privileges. I think they should re-qualify themselves, ideally. That's how I would see it. That seems logical and sensible.” Rolapp has not been willing to discuss the return of LIV players until they are relieved...

Adamson locks No. 3 seed in SSL quarterfinals

MANILA, Philippines — Adamson University bucked a slow start to defeat College of Saint Benilde, 26-24, 25-15, 25-21, and secure the No. 3 seed in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Shakey’s Super League (SSL) Unity Cup on Saturday at the Playtime FilOil Centre in San Juan. Main gunner Shaina Nitura returned from a three-game absence, providing leadership and stability as the Lady Falcons closed the Round of 8 on a winning note after dropping their first two assignments in Pool E. Adamson rallied from an eight-point deficit in the opening set with a telling 11-2 run to gain control and steal the extended frame. The previous edition’s fourth-placed team then dictated the pace for the rest of the match to complete the 79-minute sweep. The Lady Falcons will take on the twice-to-beat No. 2 seed from Pool F in the quarterfinals of the league’s centerpiece competition, backed by Shakey’s Pizza Parlor, Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken, Potato Corner, and R&B Milk Tea, starting November 14. Frances Mordi led Adamson with 11 points on nine kills, one kill block and one ace while Third Tuddao scored eight. “Although it was a slow start, I remembered what coach was telling us before the game, that we should learn to adjust,” Mordi said. “During the game, at the start, it was very slow but at the end we were able to adjust based on what coach told us,” she added.   Nitura, who only played her second game in the tournament, came off the bench and scored six of her seven points on attacks for the Lady Falcons, who hosted a block party with 11 kill blocks. Lana Barrera had seven points, Joy Aseo and Kim Rocha finished with six points each while Frisha Divinagracia got four of her five markers on kill blocks for Adamson. The Lady Falcons fell into a 6-14 hole in the first set after Lady Blazer winger Ash Lleses scored on an off-speed attack. Adamson mounted a blistering counterattack and took a 17-16 lead after an Eloi Dote kill. Aseo put Adamson at set point, 24-22, but CSB forced an extended set with back-to-back points. Dote’s runner gave the Lady Falcons a set point advantage before Rocha ended the frame with a kill block. The Lady Falcons sustained the momentum of their first set comeback to send the Lady Blazers into a three-game losing skid in the competition supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, the Commission on Higher Education, Mikasa, Asics, Rigour Technology, Jersey Haven, Solar Sports and 12 Beyond Production as technical partners.     CSB will take on twice-to-beat University of Santo Tomas in the next round. Grace Borromeo led the Lady Blazers with 10 points on eight kills and two aces, Arianna Pua scored eight while Camila Bartolome finished with seven markers.  All games in the competition are available live and on demand via PusoP.com and Solar Sports.  In the second game, University of Santo Tomas swept the Round of 8 with a quick win over Letran, 25-11, 25-19, 25-21.   Veteran hitter Regina scored 16 points, including eight in the third frame, to lead the Golden Tigresses to a 3-0 finish in Pool F and build momentum heading into next week's quarterfinals. The top-seeded twice-to-beat UST tackles Pool E No. 4 seed College of Saint Benilde in the quarters slated to begin on November 14. Jurado kept the Tigresses together in the tight third set and delivered crucial back-to-back kills to put UST at matchpoint, 24-21, after the Lady Knights closed in to within one. Erica Gutierrez finished off the reigning NCAA champion with a down the line kill. “Isa sa mga nire-remind ko sa teammates ko and for me is ‘yung kalmahan lang talaga lalo kapag crucial moments,” said Jurado, who had 13 kills and three kill blocks.   “I think, based on previous games and previous experiences, mas nara-rattle and mas naninigas kami, kaya it’s very important na at least may mag-remind kahit na not from me but other teammates as well, na mag-relax at maging kalmado. In that way, mas makakapag-isip kami kung paano manalo ng maayos,” she added. Avril Bron added seven points while Angge Poyos and Diza Berayo had six markers each for the Tigresses, who had 42 attacks, nine kill blocks and landed six aces. Letran dropped its second game in three outings despite the 11-point effort of Judiel Nitura. Nizelle Martin and Sheena Sarie got six and five points, respectively, for the Lady Knights. Letran will wait for the result of the Ateneo De Manila University and University of the Philippines clash, still being played as of press time, to determine its quarters placing. TMT

Ajay Mitchell scores a career-high 35 points as Thunder rout Grizzlies 128-97

MEMPHIS — Ajay Mitchell scored a career-high 35 points, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander added 28 and the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Memphis Grizzlies 128-97 on Friday night in an NBA Cup group stage game. Oklahoma City has won 16 straight over Memphis, including a four-game sweep in the first round of the 2025 playoffs. Jared McCain finished with 21 points for the Thunder, who shot 55%. Ty Jerome led Memphis with 21 points and Zach Edey added 14. Rookie Cameron Boozer was limited to eight points but grabbed 12 rebounds. Oklahoma City benefited from a strong shooting night. In the closing minutes of the third quarter, the Thunder were converting at just under a 60% clip. They made half of their 26 3-point attempts through three periods. Oklahoma City also forced 18 turnovers, turning them into 30 points. Memphis, which entered the game leading the NBA in 3-point percentage, struggled from distance in the first half, converting only five of its 26 attempts from beyond the arc. The Thunder, meanwhile, connected on 69% of their shots, including 9 of 17 from 3-point range. Memphis finished the game shooting 22% from 3-point range. The Thunder led by 25 points near the end of the first half. Oklahoma City went on a 12-0 run early in the third quarter to expand its lead to 32. Despite injuries to several key players, the Thunder entered having beat Cleveland twice. Gilgeous-Alexander continues to fuel the offense, scoring 43 and 42 points in the wins over the Cavaliers. Mitchell has thrived in an expanded role, averaging 21.6 points over the previous five games.

Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving rebound from sluggish 1st half to help Mavs beat Jazz 112-100

DALLAS — Cooper Flagg scored 21 points and Kyrie Irving added 14 after a sluggish first half for both stars as the Dallas Mavericks beat the Utah Jazz 112-100 in an NBA Cup game Friday night. P.J. Washington scored 22 of his season-high 26 points in a first half that ended in a 57-all tie, setting the stage for Flagg and Irving to take over after the break. Flagg scored 17 in the second half, while Irving had all but two of his points after halftime after starting 1 of 11 from the field. While Flagg's scoring lagged before the break, he had six rebounds and assists in the first half before finishing with 10 and seven, respectively. Lauri Markkanen scored 24 points and rookie Darryn Peterson had 21 for the Jazz, who lost their seventh straight game to drop to 1-8. Flagg and Irving scored 21 of the points on a 22-10 run that turned a one-point Dallas deficit into an 81-70 lead late in the third quarter. Flagg had 13 points and Irving eight. The Mavericks kept the run going after Irving went to the bench. Morez Johnson Jr. had a one-handed, alley-oop dunk to clinch his first double-double, and the Dallas lead reached 16 before Utah's Josh Okogie beat the third-quarter buzzer with a 3-pointer. Johnson tied his season best of 13 points and had 17 rebounds. Washington was 5 of 6 from 3-point range and made all five of his free throws in the first half. His sixth and final 3 helped Dallas maintain a double-digit lead throughout the fourth quarter. Dallas' Santi Aldama had eight points and nine rebounds in his first game since Feb. 4 last season with Memphis. The 7-footer was part of a six-team trade in the summer. Aldama had right knee surgery in March. Jazz: At Minnesota on Sunday. Mavericks: Host Brooklyn on Sunday. ___   See AP’s full NBA coverage here

Jayson Tatum scores 34 as Celtics demolish the Hornets 119-80 in NBA Cup play

CHARLOTTE — Jayson Tatum had 34 points, nine assists and eight rebounds, Derrick White added 18 points and the Boston Celtics demolished the Charlotte Hornets 119-80 on Friday night for their seventh win in eight games. Boston shot 17 of 31 from 3-point range in the first half to build a 31-point lead and improved to 2-0 in NBA Cup play. The Hornets fell to 0-2. Naz Reid had 14 points for Charlotte, which has lost six straight since coach Charles Lee benched Reid - the team’s biggest offseason acquisition - in the second half of a game against the Detroit Pistons because he did not meet "team standards.” This one was over early. Tatum erupted for 18 points in the first quarter on three 3s and White added 10 as the Celtics bolted to a 40-20 lead. Boston made 9 of 17 3s in the first quarter. Charlotte couldn't do anything right. The Hornets shot 28% from the field in the opening half while turning the ball over eight times. Tatum remained in the game until the final minute of the third quarter with Boston up 42 as the Celtics padded their point differential numbers for the NBA Cup. He drew "MVP!” chants from the pro-Celtics crowd after drawing what appeared to be a shooting foul as he swished a 3 from 33 feet. But the basket was waived off after officials ruled the foul was on the floor. The Hornets played without starters Kon Knueppel and Moussa Diabate, and Brandon Miller left the game in the second quarter with right groin soreness and did not return. Miller was 3 of 10 from the field with eight points before departing and appeared frustrated at times in the first half as Boston pressured him relentlessly. Lee did not offer a timetable for Knueppel's return after last year's NBA rookie of the year runner-up reinjured his hamstring on Wednesday night at Brooklyn. It was Knueppel's first game of the season.

Raptors beat the Bucks 121-107 in NBA Cup game

MILWAUKEE — Alijah Martin scored a career-high 27 points and RJ Barrett also had 27 as the short-handed Toronto Raptors defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 121-107 in an NBA Cup game Friday night. Toronto outscored Milwaukee 70-47 in the second half to improve to 1-1 while the Bucks fell to 0-1 in NBA Cup group play. They're part of East Group A along with Detroit, Orlando and Brooklyn. The Raptors were playing without seven-time all-NBA selection Kawhi Leonard (knee), two-time All-Star Scottie Barnes (groin) or starting guard Immanuel Quickley (hamstring). Leonard missed his seventh straight game. Martin picked up the slack by shooting 9 of 11 overall and 6 of 7 from 3-point range. He entered Friday having gone 6 of 27 on 3-point attempts in his career. The 2025 second-round pick from Florida hadn’t scored more than nine points in any of his previous 30 career games. Martin had totaled 23 points in seven games this season before his breakthrough Friday. Toronto's Jamal Shead added a career-high 16 assists along with 10 points. Collin Murray-Boyles and Jakob Poeltl had 19 points each. Milwaukee's Tyler Hero had 23 points and 10 assists. Bucks rookie Brayden Burries had 21 points and 11 rebounds to set career highs in both categories. The Bucks (1-8) are off to their slowest start since 1993-94, when they lost 10 of their first 11 games and went on to finish 20-62. After trailing by as many as 15 points, Toronto (5-4) took its first lead on a Martin 3-pointer that made it 71-69 with 5:41 left in the third quarter. Tyler Herro put Milwaukee back in front by hitting his first 3-pointer of the night 22 seconds later. Herro’s 3-pointer started a 10-2 run that put Milwaukee ahead 79-73, but Toronto scored the next nine points and pulled ahead for good on Allen Graves’ three-point play with 2:17 left in the third.

Warriors center Kristaps Porzingis steps away from the NBA to focus on undisclosed health issue

SAN FRANCISCO — Golden State Warriors center Kristaps Porzingis said Friday he is stepping away from basketball due to health issues. The 7-foot-2 (2.18m) Latvian, who began his NBA career with New York in 2015, has not played this season for the Warriors telling the team he would not report just before pre-season workouts began. "This season I was really looking forward to running it with this group, but as I ramped up, my body didn't respond the way I anticipated," Porzingis said in a statement posted on social media. "I'm doing good, but I know what it takes, and I'm not where I want to be to perform at the level that I expect from myself. "At this point, I've made the decision to prioritize my health and step away from the game I love." Porzingis, 31, helped the Boston Celtics win the 2024 NBA title. He was traded to Atlanta in 2025, the same year he was diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), a neurological disease. Porzingis did not mention POTS in talking about why he is stepping away, nor did he say he was retiring from the sport. The Hawks traded Porzingis to the Warriors this past February and after playing 15 games last season for Golden State he signed a two-year deal worth $40 million in June, although multiple reports say the team is not paying him while he is away. "In this situation, I want to show the utmost respect for the Golden State Warriors and work with them to find a solution that makes sense," Porzingis said. Porzingis has been in contact with Warriors medical personnel as the team has started the NBA season 6-3 and is on a six-game win streak. Porzingis has averaged 19.5 points, 7.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.8 blocked shots over 10 seasons with New York, Dallas, Washington, Boston, Atlanta and Golden State.

Cavaliers beat 76ers, 119-95

Cavaliers beat 76ers, 119-95

CLEVELAND — LeBron James got a warm reception from Northeast Ohio fans when he was the last of the Philadelphia 76ers' starters introduced before Friday night's game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. That was the only highlight for James, who scored in single digits for only the 10th time in 1,630 NBA regular-season games. James was held to eight points as the Cavaliers routed the 76ers 119-95 in an NBA Cup group stage game. The Akron, Ohio, native - who elected to sign with Philadelphia in the offseason instead of returning to Cleveland for a third stint - was 3 of 12 from the field, including 0 for 4 on 3-pointers, and committed six turnovers in 31 minutes. "Definitely not feeling a good rhythm offensively,” said James, who came out with 3:54 remaining and the 76ers trailing by 19 points. "We didn’t look like much offensively. We had a couple spurts, but too many turnovers on my behalf.” James received a smattering of boos from Cavaliers fans every time he touched the ball during the first half. There was no video tribute to James, a surprising omission from recent years. Last season, the Cavaliers showed highlights of James scoring 25 straight points during Game 5 of the 2007 Eastern Conference finals against the Detroit Pistons, which prompted him to tear up. The Cavaliers have often showed clips of Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals - when Cleveland won its first championship - or when James was the first overall pick in the 2003 draft. James spent 11 seasons over two stints with the Cavs. He left as a free agent in 2010 to join the Miami Heat, came back in 2014 and departed again in 2018 to join the Los Angeles Lakers. "At the end of the day, nothing can get as worse as December 2, 2010, from a reception standpoint. So I’ve seen them near the depths of hell when it comes to reception here all the way to the heavens above. So anything in between, it’s easy money,” James said. James missed his first two shots from beyond the arc before scoring on a driving layup with 6:37 remaining in the first quarter. Cleveland center Evan Mobley, who had 22 points, said a major emphasis coming into the game was protecting the paint. James was 2 of 6 in the paint. Donovan Mitchell, who led the Cavs with 23 points along with seven rebounds and eight assists, was happy with his team's defensive mentality. "He’s a hell of a player, but like Evan said, just trying to pack the paint and knowing that he’s trying to drive but also kick it out. He had six turnovers and you give credit where it’s due to our defense as a whole. And from there we were able to get out and get going,” Mitchell said. James had his double-digit points streak in Cleveland snapped at 396 games. The NBA’s career scoring leader had three points on Dec. 30, 2004, against Houston. His NBA-record run of 1,297 consecutive regular-season games with at least 10 points ended on Dec. 4 last season in the Lakers’ victory at Toronto. The 76ers' loss was James’ second-worst in Cleveland as a visiting player. He is 9-5, but has been on the losing end in his last three trips. Philadelphia will return to Cleveland on March 1. The Sixers came in with the NBA's best record but fell to 8-2. Coach Nick Nurse was already looking ahead to Sunday's game at Chicago. "We were lackluster and they were very, very good. And I think we expected them to be very good tonight considering that they had a couple tough losses in a row. They had us and New York coming to town (on Saturday). They had to dig in and they did,” Nurse said. "We were not very good. Probably once in a while that’s going to happen. Important thing is that we get over it and bounce back on Sunday.”
