Junior Altas record 3rd straight win in NCAA Juniors

University of Perpetual Help rookie forward Brian Orca recorded a double-double to lead the Junior Altas past the Arellano University Braves, 104-97, for their third straight victory in the NCAA Season 102 juniors basketball tournament on Friday, Sept. 25 at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City. Orca finished with 13 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals in just 22 minutes of action. Team captain Loiue Rosales chipped in 20 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals and Sizco Roquid added 19 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals for the Junior Altas.  Laurence Pillas led Arellano with 23 points, 9 boards, 6 assists, 7 steals and 3 blocks but was called for his third flagrant foul of the season after clashing with Kurt Patalinghug with two minutes remaining in the game.  The Junior Altas finished the first phase of the elimination round with a 3-1 win-loss record in Group B. MANILA, Philippines — A busy triple-header playdate opens the exciting collegiate volleyball action of the 2026 Shakey’s Super League (SSL) Unity Cup on Friday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum. Adamson University begins its quest to end a three-year podium drought when it takes on Lyceum of the Philippines University in the curtain-raiser at 1 p.m. in Pool D. The Lady Falcons, who finished third in the inaugural edition back in 2022, are parading a solid lineup behind power-hitting winger Frances Mordi, Joy Aseo, Lhouriz Tuddao, Lana Barrera, and playmakers Bella Sapienza and Fhei Sagaysay. Top hitter Shaina Nitura is expected to join the team after a short rest following a tour of duty with Alas Pilipinas in the 20th Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. Adamson aims to snatch a medal in the tournament's fifth staging, backed by Shakey’s Pizza Parlor, Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken, Potato Corner, and R&B Milk Tea, after falling short in the battle for bronze last year against Far Eastern University. “Mai-expect ‘yung high competition sa amin and really giving our all kada game,” said Sapienza, who was named Adamson’s SSL ambassador this year. On the other hand, the Lady Pirates seek a good start to their campaign following a first-round exit in the 2025 edition of the competition supported by Smart, PusoP.com, Summit Natural Drinking Water, with the Philippine Sports Commission, Commission on Higher Education, Mikasa, Asics, Rigour Technology, Jersey Haven, Solar Sports and 12 Beyond Production as technical partners. Meanwhile, Mapua University and Jose Rizal University clash at 3 p.m. to start their Pool B campaign. Both the Lady Cardinals and Lady Bombers eye better results this time after last season’s early elimination. Mapua had one win in three outings in the previous edition while JRU went winless. Capping the opening hostilities is the Pool A encounter between Arellano University and University of Perpetual Help System DALTA at 5 p.m. The opening ceremony is scheduled on Saturday at 11 a.m. followed by another triple-header. National University sets its five-peat bid in motion against San Beda University at 5 p.m. in Pool A. Austrian Painter horse renamed after complaint it referenced Adolf Hitler

LEXINGTON, Kentucky — The Jockey Club has ruled that a racehorse known as Austrian Painter has been renamed Merrylegs after a review of a complaint that alleged it was a reference to Adolf Hitler. The horse’s name drew attention after winning his debut Monday at Horseshoe Indianapolis Racecourse. Hitler was born in Austria and was an artist before becoming the head of the Nazi Party in Germany. "The Registrar determined that the name is ineligible under Rule 6.F.9.d, which prohibits names that ‘are likely to be offensive or threatening based upon factors including, but not limited to, color, creed, disability, ethnicity, gender, national origin, race, religion, politics or sexual orientation,’” the Jockey Club said in a statement announcing its decision. Owner and breeder Scott Herbertson said on social media it was a reference to Austrian painter Gustav Klimt and that his filly originally called New Order was named for his favorite band. New Order is also a term for the Nazis' plan for occupying Europe. The Jockey Club said that horse, a full sister to Merrylegs, had also been unnamed. "We take these matters seriously and appreciate that they were brought to our attention,” the Jockey Club said.
