Asian confederation boss backs Infantino's reelection bid

TOKYO — Asian Football Confederation head Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al-Khalifa endorsed Gianni Infantino's bid for reelection as FIFA president on Friday, just two months after describing his plan to sell a stake in FIFA tournaments as a "breach of trust". Infantino faced calls to resign over his failed attempt in July to bring private investors into a new commercial entity holding rights linked to competitions including the World Cup, with Sheikh Salman joining the presidents of UEFA and CONCACAF to pen an open letter criticizing the FIFA president's conduct. Infantino, who apologized over the handling of the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) project at a FIFA Council meeting in Zurich this month, is up for reelection in March next year and the support of the Asian bloc could prove crucial. Speaking at the AFC's extraordinary congress in Tokyo on Friday, Sheikh Salman said he had ironed out his differences with Infantino. "I think that we reaffirm our full commitment, of course, to supporting you and your leadership as you seek a new mandate as a FIFA president," he said in comments direc

36-hole leader Ryu Hae-ran 'happy' with state of game at LPGA event: 'Everything is good for me.'

After grabbing the lead at the halfway mark of the LPGA Tour event on her home soil Friday, Ryu Hae-ran said she was pleased with the state of her game entering the weekend. Ryu carded a bogey-free round of 64 in the second round at the BMW Ladies Championship at Pine Beach Golf Links in Haenam, some 330 kilometers south of Seoul. She is at 13-under 131, two better than fellow South Korean Kim Min-sun and American veteran Lauren Coughlin. Ryu made two eagles on the front nine and four birdies on the back nine. Over the first two rounds, Ryu has not yet made a bogey. She has been dialed in with her shotmaking, having missed just two fairways and one green this week. "Today was an amazing day. I really worried about the wind, but today's wind was much better than yesterday," Ryu said. "That is why I hit a lot of greens today. Everything is good for me. I am happy right now." Her putting, though, has been a different story, as she needed 32 putts to get around each of the first two rounds. For the season, Ryu ranks among the best on the tour in advanced and conventional ball-striking stats b

Ryu Hae-ran seizes 36-hole lead at LPGA event in Korea

Ryu Hae-ran soared to the top of the leaderboard at the LPGA Tour event in her native Korea on Friday. Ryu fired a blistering round of eight-under 64 to seize the 36-hole lead at the BMW Ladies Championship at Pine Beach Golf Links in Haenam, some 330 kilometers south of Seoul. Ryu, the highest-ranked player in the field this week at No. 3, has yet to make a bogey in this tournament. On Friday, Ryu recorded two eagles on the front nine and added four birdies on the back nine for her second consecutive bogey-free round. Ryu, who hit every green in regulation and missed just one fairway Friday, holds a two-shot lead over two players — Kim Min-sun of Korea and Lauren Coughlin of the United States — at 13-under 131. Ryu, 25, is from the nearby town of Yeongam. Her two LPGA wins this season have both come at major championships — first at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship and then at the Amundi Evian Championship. Ryu is now trying to join world No. 1 Nelly Korda and second-ranked Jeeno Thitikul as the only players to notch at least three victories in 2026. Ryu eagled the first two par-5

Letran edges San Sebastian, keeps Stags winless in NCAA

MANILA, Philippines — Colegio de San Juan de Letran denied San Sebastian College-Recoletos a chance to crack into the win column, escaping with a 91-89 victory in the NCAA Season 102 men’s basketball tournament on Friday afternoon at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City. The Knights improved to 7-3 and remained atop Group B, while the Golden Stags dropped to 0-10. Unlike their first-round meeting, which Letran dominated 99-62, the Knights were forced to work much harder in the rematch. With Letran leading 86-83 and 1:04 remaining in the game, Vincent Segovia drained a fadeaway jumper and Christian Ricio followed with a layup to give San Sebastian an 87-86 edge. Aaron Buensalida immediately answered with a layup of his own with 38 seconds remaining, and Nathaniel Montecillo converted both free throws to put Letran back in front, 89-87. Niel Castro then tied the game at 89-all with a jumper with seven seconds left. But Letran head coach Allen Ricardo drew up a final play for Jimboy Estrada, who knocked down a jumper with two seconds remaining to seal the 91-89 win. “Of course, during the dying seconds of the game, you go to your go-to guy. I trusted Jimboy and he delivered,” Ricardo said. “We had lapses in the game. San Sebastian also improved its transition threes, and we became a bit lousy. So in those final seconds, we went to Jimboy.” Chad Gammad led Letran with 23 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Buensalida stepped up in the absence of veteran Kevin Santos, finishing with 21 points and six rebounds. Estrada added 14 points, while Froilan Reyes chipped in 13. Caesleyh Bacani paced San Sebastian with 24 points, while John Ynot and Segovia contributed 16 and 13 points, respectively.
