Roof Contractor in South Windsor CT Debunks Some Common Misconceptions About Asphalt Shingles

Jun 26, 2023

June 26, 2023 - /PressAdvantage/ - Slavin Home Improvements has been providing quality roofing services in Manchester, CT, and the surrounding areas for many years now. That has led them to become one of the most experienced and knowledgeable roofing contractors in its area. The company goes to great lengths to always share that knowledge with its customers to help them make sound roof repair choices. A good example of that is a recent blog article that this company posted on its website that debunks some of the common myths about highly popular asphalt shingle products.

This new blog starts by saying that even though asphalt roofing shingles have been providing excellent protection for homes in Connecticut for many decades now, there are still many misconceptions about how well they perform. Such is the case when this roof covering material’s longevity comes into question. The blog clearly states that not only do asphalt shingles hold up well for a long time if properly taken care of, constant improvements in the materials that go into making them have them now lasting longer than ever before.

In the recently posted blog, the post mentions that there are some that view asphalt shingles as being very limited when it comes to choices in looks. The article stated that while this used to be the case, that’s no longer true. Asphalt shingle products now come in many choices. There is different color shingle to choose from and choices in the decorative patterns they come in also. It was stated in this blog that modern-day shingle can even be purchased that mimics the looks of more expensive roof coverings such as slate and wood shake.

Also mentioned in this newly posted article is that asphalt shingle still contains asbestos. That is something that has not taken place since the early 1960s. It’s a very safe roofing material to have on a home and because of its material content, it’s a recyclable roof covering material, too. Other shingle-related topics that were discussed in this Slavin Home Improvement blog include asphalt shingle sealant curing time and how lighter and darker shades of shingles impact cooling-associated costs.

Zak Slavin, the company owner, says, “We are always happy to answer any questions that our customers may have about any of the roofing products that we supply and install. That includes any questions someone considering a major roof repair may have about the many different choices of asphalt shingle products that we carry.”

In addition to being one of the most knowledgeable roofing companies in its area, this roofer also has had many glowing reviews about its services left on its Google My Business listing. The following Slavin Home Improvements customer review is a good example of that.

Marissa Jacko stated, “We had the privilege of working with Zak and his team on our home for a roof replacement, and addition of gutters. They did a wonderful job! They were communicative, diligent, respectful, and extremely knowledgeable. The cost of the project was reasonable, as well. We are so grateful for the Slavin team helping us to protect our home and for their attention to detail and honesty. My family and I would highly recommend them. It was a true gift to work with them!"

Another customer expressed similar sentiments about a recent whole roof replacement project that Slavin Home Improvements completed for them.

Manny Reis proclaimed, “I am extremely pleased with the recent roof replacement from Slavin Home Improvement. Zac and his crew were hardworking, professional, and conscientious during the entire 2-day process. They also installed new gutter guards. I will be sure to recommend them to anyone I know who needs any type of roof repair work done!"

Slavin says that customers with questions about asphalt shingles or any other type of roof repair-related concerns can get in touch with him directly by phone or reach out to him by using the contact form that this roof contractor in South Windsor CT has on its website.

NCAA: Arellano clinches QF berth after edging San Sebastian

MANILA, Philippines — Arellano University secured a quarterfinals spot and improved its chances to earn a twice-to-beat incentive after escaping the first-win-seeking San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 69-61, in the second round of the NCAA Season 102 men’s basketball tournament on Tuesday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City. Arellano improved to a 6-6 win-loss record to take the second seed in Group B, ahead of Emilio Aguinaldo College (5-6) and Perpetual Help (3-8), while San Sebastián remained winless with a 0-12 card. T-mc Ongotan led the scoring for Arellano with 22 points, five rebounds, two steals, and four blocks. Renzo Abiera backed up Ongotan with 19 points, while King Vinoya made 11 points and eight rebounds for the team’s victory. San Sebastian held a slim lead throughout the first three frames, 51-50, before the Chiefs took full control at the quarter that mattered the most, scoring 19 points in the fourth canto alone, while the Golden Stags only made 10. The Golden Stags are still looking for their first win as the 19-point effort of Kent Baani was not enough. No matter the result of future Group B games, Letran is the only team assured of a top seed in the tourney with an 8-3 record.   The scores: AU 69 - Ongotan 22, Abiera 19, Vinoya 11, Geronimo 6, Valencia 4, Borromero 2, Langit 2, Manansala 2, Hernal 1, Camay 0, Buenaventura 0, Flores 0, Cabotaje 0, Barraca 0 SSC-R 61 - Bacani 19, Muktimar 16, Barroga 7, Gabat 7, Castor 4, Cuya 3, Velasco 3, Kitane 1, Suico 1, Salvo 0 Quarter scores: 14-20, 36-40, 50-51, 69-61

Youth Olympics: Coleman skips 100m breaststroke, prioritizes health amid village heat

DAKAR, Senegal — Riannah Chantelle Coleman experienced difficulty in breathing and had to withdraw from the women’s100 meters breaststroke heats on Tuesday—the second of her three events in the 4th Youth Olympic Games (YOG). “It was decided that Riannah would be better off resting for at least two days rather than take the risk in the 100,” said Team Philippines swimming coach Ramil Ilustre. “She’ll have two days to recover for her last event.” Coleman hyperventilated after the 200m breaststroke heats on Monday and had to be attended to by the YOG Medical Team and was eventually given the green light for the final on the same day, finishing seventh among eight swimmers at the Dakar Olympic Pool. “It’s the heat,” said Coleman, whose last event will be the 50 meters breaststroke on Friday. Three other swimmers were treated for hyperventilation on Monday. The is no air-conditioning in all the rooms at the Youth Olympic Village (YOV) and athletes have been assigned one electric fan each to battle the heat and humidity. “Riannah’s really bothered by the heat, in fact she’s requested to have four electric fans to be directed on her bed,” said Chef de Mission Rocky Samson. “It’s the same condition for everyone in the village, all countries.” Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham Tolentino agreed with Coleman’s withdrawal from the 100 breaststroke, saying her health and safety are a priority. “We cannot risk Riannah’s health and safety, she’s young and she has a whole swimming career ahead of her,” said Tolentino of the 17-year-old Coleman. A room at the YOV has four beds each and male and female toilets are common—one for athletes and another for coaches or officials. Jamesryan Mishael Ajido was focused in training on Tuesday for his two events on Wednesday—the 50 meters freestyle and 50 meters butterfly which are separated only by three other heats. Gymnasts Tchelzy Maayo and Hillarion Palles III already checked in at the village on Monday along with their coaches Reyland Capellan and Japanese Kazutaka Hakamada. Capellan, a former national gymnast who retired after the SEA Games at home in 2019, said training started in earnest for Maayo and Palles on Tuesday. “It was a long flight and our athletes need to be ready for the competition while shedding off jetlag,” Capellan said. The gymnasts’ flight took longer that the 30 hours for the first batch of athletes—they had a 19-hour layover in Istanbul, almost a day long, but still pales in comparison with the 40-hour record route Team Australia took to get to the Senegalese capital. The gymnastics competitions start Saturday at the Dakar Exhibition Center in Diamniado. With only two athletes, Team Philippines—supported by the Philippine Sports Commission—isn’t eligible for the team event and will only vie in the men and individual all-around, according to Capellan. Alexander Zverev’s long wait for No. 1 ranking comes in dominant tennis season

Alexander Zverev finally rose to No. 1 in the men's tennis rankings on Monday, a reward for a dominant season during which he shed his reputation as a talented underachiever and became a two-time Grand Slam champion. Zverev won the French Open and the US Open, putting to rest his tag as the best player yet to win a Grand Slam. He's guaranteed the year-end No. 1 ranking, too. “It’s a very special day, for sure,” Zverev said in Paris, where he is set to compete in the Paris Masters this week. “Paris has been quite special to me this year, generally. It’s a place where I had a lot of up-and-downs, I had a lot of heartbreak, but this year, winning my first Grand Slam here and becoming world No. 1, it’s a very special feeling.” He became the 30th man to reach No. 1, and the oldest in more than 50 years to top the rankings for the first time. John Newcombe was 30 when he reached the top spot in 1974. Zverev reached the rankings summit more than four years after becoming No. 2. “I had to wait,” he said. “But sometimes you’ve got to wait for the best things in life. I’m super happy, super thrilled.” Despite winning two ATP Finals and an Olympic gold medal, Zverev lost his first three Grand Slam finals, none more disheartening than his first at the 2020 U.S. Open after leading Dominic Thiem two sets to love. But he broke through this year, and also reached his first Wimbledon final, falling to Jannik Sinner. He has a 65-17 win-loss record this year. Zverev, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 4, is just the second German man to become No. 1 after Boris Becker. Sinner, on top since April 13, dropped to second, followed by Carlos Alcaraz. Sinner announced the end of his season three weeks ago because of inflammation in his right knee. Alcaraz was hampered by injury and fatigue this season but has returned to full fitness and won the Vienna title on Sunday. “I’m looking forward to the top two guys being healthy again, playing fully and competing with them,” Zverev said. He added he feels more confident on grass after struggling on the fast surface. “I definitely feel like I can compete for all the four Grand Slams,” he said. “Hopefully getting a few more would be great for me.” Among other notable moves in the rankings, 20-year-old Spaniard Rafael Jodar climbed to No. 10 less than a year after making this tour debut at the Australian Open. Jodar set a record for the fastest rise from debut to the top 10 — 287 days — breaking Gustavo Kuerten’s mark of 490 days. Zverev’s ascension to the top ranking comes after two of his ex-girlfriends accused him of physical abuse. One accusation from 2020 was resolved following an agreement between German prosecutors, lawyers for Zverev and his former partner. The ATP investigated another case and in January 2023 concluded there was insufficient evidence.

Highrisers outlast Chargers in five-set thriller for breakthrough PVL victory

MANILA, Philippines — The Galeries Tower Highrisers finally barged into the win column after averting disaster against the Akari Chargers, 25-22, 26-24, 23-25, 15-25, 15-10, in the 2026 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) All-Filipino Conference-Siklab Series on Tuesday at the Araneta Coliseum. Erika Deloria stuffed the statistical sheet with 20 points, 11 excellent digs, and 28 excellent receptions to fend off the Chargers, who were led by tough guns Fifi Sharma, Ivy Lacsina, and Eli Soyud. “For me, it’s a test of character for us players. Even though we were down and we had miscommunications, we were able to hold on to each other, and our goal is the same,” Deloria told the media during the post-game presser. The Chargers, who came off back-to-back wins despite the absence of head coach Tina Salak, were stunned by the Highrisers, with 2026 first pick Lams Lamina displaying her class after orchestrating 21 excellent sets. This playmaking activated Galeries’ gunners Jean Asis and Alyssa Bertolano to score 14 and 12 points each, respectively. In the deciding frame, both teams were tied at 9-all before Asis made back-to-back hits that gave the Highrisers the advantage, 11-9. Lycha Ebon scored two consecutive points after an off-the-block hit and a push to extend the Galeries rally to 4-0, 13-9. Sharma stopped the bleeding for the Chargers with a quick attack, 13-10. But Bertolano took matters into her own hands after swinging two consecutive kills that allowed Galeries to avoid a reverse sweep, 15-10. Akari was led by Soyud's 24-point outing, while fiery hitters Lacsina and Sharma added 13 and 12 points each that all went down the drain. Faith Nisperos also joined the double-digit mark for the Chargers with 10 points, but it was not enough to overcome the Highrisers. The Galeries tallied a 1-4 win-loss record, while Akari fell to 2-3.
