What are the RISKS AND CHALLENGES FOR NFTS?

NFT (Non-Fungible Tokens) is a digital certificate of authenticity. Currently, NFTs are digital tokens that involve digital arts, digital assets, music, video, and or any other asset in the digital world created on blockchain technology. On auction, classic works of art, antiques, vinyl, first-edition books, and other historical items are sold. All items are certified to be authentic before being put up for auction.

In this digital environment, People can collect, sell, buy, and or wreck NFTs. Blockchain technology keeps a transaction log and the price of that NFT, so it is visible to everyone on the internet. The role of NFTs in the future is uncertain, but the environmental impact of NFTs, due mainly to the energy used in mining to confirm the blockchain transaction, should be addressed.

NFTs Aren't Environmentally Friendly.

By 2025, the digital world's global carbon emissions will represent 9% of greenhouse gas. The environmental impact of NFTs is not likely to improve the situation. The problem lies in their high energy consumption and, more precisely, the energy the blockchain uses that allows them to exist.

Bitcoin and Ethereum networks are the most renowned, and most digital art uses the Ethereum blockchain. Ethereum is one of the more energy-intensive forms of blockchain, and its impact on the environment is substantial. This situation is flexible, and blockchain companies are taking steps to reduce emissions.

The widespread popularity of digital art is starting to be outweighed by its carbon footprint, which is high. Despite the recent craze surrounding digital art, its negative environmental impact must be considered.

For example, the NFT GIF "Space Cat" (depicting a cat in a rocket soaring towards the moon) uses the same amount of energy an average European citizen uses for two months. The problem is that this example is only one in a million, as reported in an analysis by digital artist Memo Atken, who calculated that a single Ethereum transaction is estimated to have a carbon footprint on average of 35 kWH. It is equivalent to an EU resident's four-day electric power consumption.

Challenges and Risks Associated with NFTs

1) Cyber Hackers Attack

Non-Fungible tokens are making massive incomes for their creators.

It gives considerable rise to the possibility of cyberattacks and online fraud. There are high chances of damage to digital assets and investors buying and selling NFTs. NFTs have enormous potential. However, there are certain risks that one needs to consider.

The risk of smart contracts and maintenance of NFT is a critical one currently prevailing in the market. Cyber hackers attack a DeFi (Decentralized Finance) network in several scenarios and steal crypto.

Hackers attacked the most-renowned DeFi protocol, Poly Network, and $600 million was stolen in this NFT theft. The reason behind that theft was that security was inadequate, and the hackers exploited the defects of smart contracts to attack the Poly Network.

2) Evaluation Challenges

A significant challenge in the NFT market is the determination of the price of the NFT. The cost of any NFT will depend on creativity, uniqueness, and scarcity. Fluctuations in the prices of NFT are considerable due to a nonfixed standard for any specific kind of NFT.

3) Legal Challenges

NFT has no known legal definition. Countries like the UK, Japan, and the EU, are in strategic discussion with different approaches for classifying NFT.

4) Risks of Fraud Online

As the popularity of NFT grows, the chances of cyber threats to the NFT market grow. Numerous cases show replicas of the original NFT stores on the internet.

Due to the original logo and content, these stores look authentic. However, these counterfeit NFT stores are an enormous risk because they could sell NFTs not represented digitally. Furthermore, there are chances of counterfeit NFTs being sold in a fake NFT store.

A further risk is when someone impersonates a famous NFT artist and sells fake NFTs. Online fraud risks are substantial due to copyright theft, fake airdrops, fake NFT giveaways, and the duplication of NFTs.

5) Intellectual Property Rights

The ownership of any NFT is another crucial topic under consideration. When purchasing an NFT from the market, find out whether the seller owns that NFT. There are occasions where people pose as sellers selling replicas. Here, the right to use that NFT but not the intellectual property rights is implied.

The Challenge of NFTs as Securities

Buying NFTs as securities is a consideration for some people. The SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) it is stated that most NFTs in the market are being sold as securities.

The Future Environmental Impact of NFTs and Digital Art

This shift from PoW to PoS has been lauded by cryptocurrency fans and those working in the digital art world. However, the crypto-art industry still faces significant challenges in terms of environmental preservation. As the digital world is relatively new, a central concern surrounding its ecological impact must be considered, and rules and regulations must be created to curb its harmful effects.

An overview of the risks and challenges and their effects on NFTs can help create possible solutions. It is vital to have a unified regulatory framework, focused standards, and secure platforms for creating and trading NFTs.

It is vital to perform thorough research. Regarding non-fungible tokens, it is much better first to understand all the risks and challenges. It will even make buying and selling NFTs in the market easy by eliminating the risks.

NFTs shouldn't be treated as a quick way to make money. Blockchain in financial services can add much value to the systems in place. However, investors should know how much money they can make on NFTs, or they are likely to lose it all in minutes.

Injuries hamper start of NBA season

Injuries hamper start of NBA season

IF things go the way Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves currently envision, he’ll be back from arthroscopic knee surgery in plenty of time for a playoff push and possibly making a run at winning an NBA championship. In other words, his injury could have been worse. Edwards is out of Minnesota’s lineup for the foreseeable future, since the long-term goal — a title — obviously is far more important than anything like the individual awards that he won’t be eligible to win this season because he’ll miss too many games. He was playing in pain. His knee was only going to keep hurting. The decision was clear and fixing it now is the smart move. “It was kind of a bit of a shock to everybody last night, certainly unexpected at that point,” Timberwolves coach Chris Finch said Wednesday night. “The guys are pretty resilient. They came in in a pretty good mood today. Obviously, we talked a little bit about it, what it might mean for us going forward. ... Certainly, guys are disappointed for him and us. But, nothing you can do.” Edwards will be back with plenty of season left. Some teams don’t have that to lean on right now. Oklahoma City star Jalen Williams’ horrific leg and ankle injuries could only be repaired by surgery that may be season-ending, and Thunder teammate Cason Wallace is looking at a similar long road back after shoulder surgery. Both got hurt Sunday night, creating serious early season angst for a team that was widely expected to contend for a second championship in three years. Williams had surgery Wednesday in New York to fix the broken leg and reconstruct ankle ligaments. But — in perhaps a glimmer of hope — the Thunder said “Williams will be re-evaluated prior to the end of the 2026-27 regular season.” “We have a unique experience with this. It’s not something you want to have a lot of experience with, but we do,” Thunder general manager Sam Presti said, noting that Oklahoma City has not had the best luck in recent years when it comes to injuries. “I think we’ll probably lean on some of that. Then a large portion of it is we’re very process-oriented. I think it keeps you humble in good times and keeps you stable when you’re going through some adversity.” And adversity clearly has hit Oklahoma City, Minnesota and a few other places. Toronto will be without Kawhi Leonard for at least a week, probably more, because of knee swelling. Given his injury history, any mention of “Leonard” and “knee” in the same sentence likely sends chills down the spines of Raptors fans. The good news is that the Raptors say there’s no acute left knee injury causing the problem. The bad news is, well, there’s a problem. “Part of the game,” Toronto’s RJ Barrett said. “Obviously we wish everybody could play every game, but injuries are part of the game. That’s why you have a whole team. ... Until he gets back, we’ve got to figure it out.” Orlando is already down two players, with Paolo Banchero out for perhaps a month with a high ankle sprain and Jalen Suggs out with a knee issue that will sideline him for a couple of weeks — although when he got hurt, the initial fear was that it could have been something far more serious. Utah, a team that hopes to reenter the playoff chase for the first time in years, just lost center Jaren Jackson Jr. for perhaps two months with a torn knee ligament. Indiana — which didn’t have star guard Tyrese Haliburton last season because of a torn Achilles suffered in Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals — is bracing for him to be limited again, at least for a while, with what the team called a mild left hamstring strain. “Let’s just say, two weeks from now, if you guys want to ask how he’s doing, that’ll be fine,” Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. “I don’t think it’s realistic that he would play before then. And then we’ll go from there. There’s a chance he could play in that period of time. It is mild. But it is a hamstring. And so, we’ll be cautious with it. It’s not good news but it could be worse.” All is not lost. But especially in what many believe could be very tight playoff races by season’s end, no team wants to be without its stars for too long. “It’s very early in the season,” Banchero said. “There’s a lot out in front of us.” He’ll be back. So, too, will Edwards. Leonard could be playing before long. They’re fortunate compared with many; Sacramento’s Ben Simmons blew out his Achilles tendon before the season even started and will miss another year, Golden State’s Kristaps Porzingis is away from the team while dealing with a health issue and a few other players — such as the Warriors’ Jimmy Butler III and the Timberwolves’ Donte DiVincenzo — are still sidelined while dealing with major injuries suffered last season. Losing Edwards is a tough blow to Minnesota. It likely will cost the Timberwolves some wins in November and December. But if it leads to wins in May and June, whatever struggles happen now surely will be deemed worthwhile.

Heat earn first win of NBA season

LOS ANGELES — The Miami Heat finally earned their first win since the start of the season and the arrival of superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, defeating the Atlanta Hawks, 129-117, on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila). The Greek two-time NBA Most Valuable Player had been expected to immediately propel Miami into the ranks of Eastern Conference contenders, but his first victory in a Heat uniform came at the fifth time of asking. Antetokounmpo, who had a triple-double in defeat to the Dallas Mavericks two nights earlier, again racked up impressive numbers, with 24 points and 18 rebounds. This time he was backed up by teammates Bam Adebayo, who scored 24 with nine rebounds, and Andrew Wiggins who added 18 points. Former Milwaukee Bucks star Antetokounmpo reached 1,000 career steals while Adebayo became the Heat’s all-time leading rebounder, surpassing the record of 5,791 previously held by Udonis Haslem. The star-packed Philadelphia 76ers bounced back from Sunday’s disappointing loss against Detroit to move to 4-1 with victory in a back-and-forth clash with the Indiana Pacers. The new home of LeBron James struggled to see off Indiana, which this week announced it would be without star Tyrese Haliburton for around two weeks due to a hamstring injury. The Sixers fell behind in a lop-sided third quarter, but rallied down the final stretch to seal a road victory. Tyrese Maxey scored 17 of his 27 points in a blistering fourth quarter showing to spare his team’s blushes. James managed just 13 points but added 10 assists, while Joel Embiid had 21 points and 11 rebounds, and Jaylen Brown provided 20 points. AJ Dybantsa, the top overall pick of the recent NBA Draft, played his first NBA minutes during the Washington Wizards’ 121-111 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Nineteen-year-old Dybantsa had missed the Wizards’ first four games with an ankle sprain but started Wednesday, scoring 19 points. The Cavaliers clinched victory in the final quarter. Donovan Mitchell scored 19 points with seven assists.

San Beda survives Mapua's fightback to extend win streak to 3

MANILA, Philippines — San Beda University survived Mapua University’s Cyrus Cueno fiery three-point shooting in the fourth quarter to extend its winning streak to three with a 61-57 victory in the NCAA Season 102 men’s basketball tournament on Thursday afternoon at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City. The Red Lions held an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter, 50-39, when Cueno, who sank three consecutive triples, led a rally to pull Mapua within one, 51-50, with 4:12 remaining. Daniel Marcelo stopped the bleeding for San Beda after scoring a layup, followed by Dominic Sarigumba completing his free throws to build a 55-50 cushion with 3:39 seconds left. The three-point party was not yet over for the Cardinals as Jamal Diaz connected from beyond the arc to cut San Beda's lead down to two, 55-53. With both teams already in penalty, the game all boiled down on who’s more composed at the end of the stretch with Marcelo making both of his charities count, while Cuenco scored one out of two from the free throw line with under two minutes remaining. The Red Lions maximized their trips from the foul line to secure the win. “As you can see, I was so mad at the sidelines, and I told the team to focus on the things that we control. We were able to get crucial rebounds, and crucial stops at the end,” San Beda head coach Yuri Escueta said. “Also with Cuenco, we are prepared for that, and I can say that he is the new Mr. 4th Quarter in the NCAA, and in their previous games, Cuenco really scored 20 points and above; that’s where their offense comes from,” he added. Marcelo finished with 16 points while John Bonzalida added 10 points for San Beda. Mapua was led by Cuenco who scored 23 points while Yam Concepcion finished with a double -double of 12 points and 12 rebounds that all went down the drain. San Beda improved its chances to earn a twice-to-beat quarterfinals advantage with an 8-3 card, tied with Jose Rizal University. Mapua dropped to 6-5.
