Two Scientology Volunteer Ministers from Soshanguve, Boitumelo Maswanganye and Juliette Mfomadi, have launched a learner support programme to improve the grades of struggling learners. Concerned by reports that 82% of grade 4 learners are unable to read for meaning, Maswanganye and Mfomadi established learner support centers to address the barriers to learning. The after-school programme has achieved remarkable results, with learners reporting significant improvements in their ability to learn and their school results. Maswanganye emphasized that the programme not only rehabilitates learners who had given up on studying but also encourages them to pursue further education. Mfomadi, the principal of Kamogelo Daycare, transformed her center into an after-school care center that provides learner support and enables children to read for meaning. Grateful parents have expressed their gratitude for the programme, sharing stories of remarkable changes they have witnessed in their children academically. The Tools for Life skills development program, developed by humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard, is delivered for free by Scientology Volunteer Ministers to empower communities and is applicable to all members of society. The programme includes free seminars and training sessions hosted by the volunteers.

Midrand, Gauteng, South Africa - October 5, 2023 —
Boitumelo Maswanganye and Juliette Mfomadi, two Scientology Volunteer Ministers from Soshanguve have been bringing hope to learners struggling with reading for meaning and created a movement of assisting failing students with Learner Support Tools that has improved their school results. Parents of the learner’s report of miraculous results brought by the after school programme.
Deeply concerned by the recent reports indicating that 82% of grade 4 learners cannot read for meaning, Boitumelo and Julliete rolled up their sleeves and established learner support centers to tackle these barriers to learning head on. Kids in attending this after school programme described how they now are able to learn better and have improved their results.
“It not only rehabilitates learners who had given up on study, but it encourages them to pursue further studies. Learners that come here go from not being able to understand what they read to now getting over 90% in school tests,” says Boitumelo.
“I couldn’t just stand by idly while the many children in my community lost hope in education. I created a Learner Support Volunteer group to take in troubled children and help them with their study difficulties and the results are spectacular and beyond expectation,” said Juliette.

Boitumelo, who herself is a graduate from the Scientology Volunteer Ministers Tools For Life programme, decided to apply her newly learned practical skills to her community, one of the practical tools she had just learned. “Knowing how study can determine how far you go in life, in my community a lot of learners are hit with barriers to learning”, continued Boitumelo. Not only did she decide to help, she further established her own NPO called Arise and Shine in order to create a platform for help where learners with learning difficulties can come and receive learner support.
While Juliette Mfomadi, principal of Kamogelo Daycare in Soshanguve decided to use her daycare center as an afterschool care center that caters to the children in her community who are struggling with barriers to learning. She has been providing Learner Support to great success and is now enabling children to Read for Meaning.
One grateful parent whose child has been attending the after school learner support program shared this, “My son is now one of the top students in his class, serving as class president and a shining example of a dedicated student. I am immensely grateful to this learner support program in Soshanguve. Since my son started attending this afterschool program, I have witnessed remarkable changes.”
According to Boitumelo, understanding that kids are also human and are complex with their own personalities has also assisted her in understanding them properly. She gets them involved so that they can also experience that their ideas count and they are capable of solving problems. "The Tools for Life have helped me a lot because they provided me with the right tools for every situation. I know exactly how to help and encourage them now," added Boitumelo.
Parents and learners in the community have all unanimously expressed how much improvement they have seen already academically.
The "Tools for life" skills development program is delivered for free by the Scientology Volunteer Ministers as a way to empower communities and is applicable to all members of society. They host a variety of free seminars for communities and have trained thousands and thousands from their headquarters in Castle Kyalami on this effective program written by humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard.
