Lee’s fighting heart shines in Pueblo de Oro triumph

MANILA, Philippines – Tiffany Lee had waited two long years to win again, and when her chance finally came, she had to fight for every inch of it. The Manila-based Korean saw a seemingly comfortable four-shot lead unravel in a harrowing front-nine struggle at the ICTSI Pueblo de Oro Championship on Wednesday. But just when the title appeared to be slipping away, the 18-year-old summoned the resolve, composure and fighting heart that have come to define her young career, producing a clutch back-nine rally to turn back Yvon Bisera by two strokes on a closing 72 and end a frustrating wait for her second professional victory. It was no runaway triumph. It was a test of character. Lee stumbled early, surrendered her commanding advantage and found herself trailing in a gripping duel that went down to the final hole at Pueblo de Oro Golf and Country Club in Cagayan de Oro. With the pressure mounting and Bisera threatening to force a playoff, Lee refused to fold, rediscovered her touch at the crucial moment and delivered the decisive blows when the championship hung in the balance. Back-to-back birdies from No. 14 brought Lee back to two-under overall and pulled her level with Bisera, wiping out the damage of a difficult opening stretch. She then birdied the par-5 No. 17 to regain the outright lead before calmly parring the last hole to close out a gritty even par card. Her three-round total of four-under 212 secured the championship and the top prize of P162,500 – a richly deserved reward for a player who had endured two years of near-misses and frustration since bursting onto the Ladies Philippine Golf Tour scene with a one-stroke victory in her professional debut at Splendido Taal in 2024. Bisera finished with a 70 for a 214, settling for runner-up honors once again despite having two victories to her credit. In a final round that demanded patience, precision and nerves of steel, she pushed Lee to the limit but could not find the finishing touch in the clutch. For her, the path to victory was anything but smooth. “It was a roller-coaster. There were a lot of downs and there were a lot of downs,” said Lee. “I think it was a combination of smart choices and confidence, which is very hard to have under pressure. But I tried my best.” Turning the tide required a moment of brilliance under pressure, which she found on the back nine. Pointing to a clutch birdie on No. 14 as the pivotal turning point. “I was already one down at that point, so I really needed to make a birdie and create a chance,” she said. Lee seized that opportunity – and followed it up with two more birdies that sealed her momentum. Looking back at her journey, Lee was quick to credit her support system, especially her father, Youngin Lee, who serves a multi-faceted role in her career. “He supports me, coaches me, and caddies for me. Unfortunately, he couldn’t caddie in the last two days due to a back injury,” shared Lee. “Most of the credit goes to my dad, my family, and to ICTSI for providing this circuit.” Having endured a lengthy dry spell and a frustrating 2025 season where she struggled to contend, self-doubt had begun to creep in. When asked what this latest victory truly meant to her, she opened up about the mental hurdle: “It means a lot. It’s been hard not to win for a long time, and I wasn’t even getting close in 2025, which made me start doubting myself,” she admitted. Those doubts, however, have finally given way to renewed self-assurance and a refined mental approach. “I just let go of the things I cannot control and focused on myself – which is hard because it’s a one-on-one, highly challenging competition,” she said. “This win is a great reward for all the days I have silently and continuously fought for. So yeah, I’m really happy with this win.” The two-shot winning margin hardly told the full story of a final round that swung dramatically between control and crisis, with Lee's composure and determination ultimately proving decisive. Armed with a four-shot cushion, she had room to manage the course and dictate the pace of the final round. But golf can be unforgiving, and a shaky front nine quickly transformed what looked like a comfortable march to victory into a battle for survival. As Lee struggled to maintain her edge, Bisera steadily worked her way back into contention, turning the championship into a tense two-player showdown. Every dropped shot by Lee tightened the contest, while every opportunity for Bisera raised the prospect of another painful near-miss for the teenager who had waited so long to return to the winner's circle. Lee, however, refused to let the frontside collapse define her day. With the title slipping from her grasp, she regrouped and dug deep, finding the birdies she desperately needed to pull even at two-under overall. The consecutive gains changed the complexion of the contest, restoring her momentum and forcing Bisera to respond under mounting pressure. Lee seized the initiative for good on the 17th, where another birdie pushed her back in front. Having fought her way out of trouble and reclaimed control, she faced one final task: keep her nerve on the final hole. She did exactly that, settling for par and putting the pressure squarely on Bisera to produce something special to stay alive. One stroke behind with only the closing hole remaining, Bisera went for broke off the tee but pulled her drive, leaving herself a difficult approach into the par-4 18th. She failed to find the green with her second shot, then chipped onto the putting surface but could not save par, taking two putts to finish with a bogey. The closing mistake ended Bisera's bid to force a playoff and sealed Lee's hard-earned victory. It was a two-player affair from the outset, and the two contenders delivered the kind of final-round drama that kept the championship in doubt until the final putt. Lee's front-nine troubles gave Bisera an opening, but the Korean’s late surge demonstrated that her long wait for another victory had strengthened rather than diminished her resolve. The rest of the field could only watch as the duel unfolded. Martina Miñoza fired a 71 to finish a distant third at 220, while Sarah Ababa carded a 71 for fourth at 222, and Harmie Constantino matched par 72 to take fifth at 223. Apple Fudolin and Velinda Castil shared sixth at 225 after 74 and 75, respectively. Angela Mangana placed eighth at 226 after a 75, while Princess Superal and Gretchen Villacencio tied for ninth at 227, after 73 and 78, respectively. Ace Superal shot a 76 to finish tied for 14th at 234 and captured the low amateur honors. In the end, though, the day belonged to Lee. Her victory was more than a return to the winner's circle. It was a reminder of the resilience required to survive the unforgiving swings of professional golf – the discipline to endure a collapse, the courage to fight back and the nerve to deliver when a championship is on the line. Two years after her breakthrough debut victory with a one-shot escape over Mikha Fortuna, Lee finally had another trophy to show for her efforts. And she earned it the hard way – not by protecting a lead, but by fighting to win it back. TMT

Mondilla strikes with late eagle, grabs solo lead at ICTSI Pueblo

MANILA, Philippines – Clyde Mondilla delivered his decisive blow when it mattered most, capping a late-round surge with a spectacular eagle on the par-5 No. 17 to card a four-under 68 Wednesday and seize the solo lead in the ICTSI Pueblo de Oro Championship, moving within 18 holes of a long-awaited return to the winner’s circle. Locked in a fierce, day-long battle for control, Mondilla found another gear down the stretch, stringing together crucial birdies before nearly holing his second shot on the 17th. The late flourish lifted the Bukidnon ace to a 10-under-par 206 total and gave him a precious one-stroke cushion over Russell Bautista heading into the final round of the P2.5-million championship. The surge proved decisive in a crowded leaderboard that had featured a multiple tie at eight-under, with Rupert Zaragosa, Keanu Jahns and Jeffren Lumbo also keeping themselves firmly in contention. Mondilla, however, produced the round’s defining shot to emerge as the man to beat in the eighth leg of the Philippine Golf Tour. “Okay naman ang position ko. Sana magtuloy-tuloy,” said Mondilla, who is chasing his first championship in two years after defeating Angelo Que by three strokes at Caliraya Springs in 2024. Having started the day two shots behind halfway leaders Bautista and Zaragosa, Mondilla initially struggled to gain ground, making the turn at even par. But rather than force the issue, he stayed patient, relying on his short game to limit the damage before unleashing his charge over the closing holes. Birdies on Nos. 11 and 15 brought him into the thick of the fight, setting the stage for the spectacular finish on the penultimate hole. Mondilla’s booming drive traveled an estimated 345 yards, leaving him with a 185-yard second shot. He then unleashed a 7-iron that settled tantalizingly close to the cup, setting up a tap-in eagle that finally separated him from the chasing pack. The shot was almost even better than an eagle, as Mondilla came agonizingly close to holing his approach for an albatross. “Muntik nang mag-albatross,” he said, recalling the shot that turned a tightly contested battle into a solo-lead bid. Mondilla credited his patience and faith in his game plan for keeping him in contention despite an uneven start. With the back nine offering more scoring opportunities, he knew he still had time to make his move. “Sa front nine, maraming up-and-down, pero nakaka-save naman ako ng par. Hindi ako nawalan ng pag-asa kasi maraming birdie holes sa back nine, at nag-work out naman,” he said. Bautista, meanwhile, slipped to second after carding a 71 but remained within striking distance at nine-under 207, keeping his bid for a breakthrough PGT title very much alive after losing to Lumbo in a five-hole play at South Pacific last year. Zaragosa, who shared the halfway lead with Bautista, endured a difficult stretch after turning in three-over through 12 holes. He recovered with three birdies over the closing stretch to salvage a 72 and settle into solo third at 208. Lumbo, who returned a 70, and Jahns, who shot a 71, shared fourth at 209, just three strokes behind Mondilla. With four players within three shots of the lead, the championship remains wide open, setting up a high-pressure finish on the Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed layout. Mondilla knows that protecting his advantage will require more than the big shots that carried him to the top. With the course demanding precision and patience, he is determined to remain disciplined rather than be distracted by the pressure of a title within reach. “Ang pressure, nandoon lagi ’yan. It’s a question of how one handles it,” said Mondilla, who is well aware of the challenges posed by the demanding layout. His approach for Thursday’s final round will be to trust the plan that brought him the lead and make the most of the course’s challenging but rewarding greens. “Ang importante, mag-stick ako sa game plan ko kasi hindi madali ang course. I will just enjoy the game and the course, especially the greens,” he added. Zanieboy Gialon mounted his own late charge, holing out for an eagle on the par-4 16th before birdying the last to shoot a 69 and take solo sixth at 210. Fourteen-year-old Junior PGT standout Ralph Batican strengthened his hold on the low amateur honors with a gutsy 70, joining Jelbert Gamolo, who carded a 71, in a share of seventh at 211. Reymon Jaraula, the champion when Pueblo de Oro last hosted a PGT event in 2019, produced one of the day’s strongest finishes. After opening with a 77, he caught fire over the closing stretch, birdying five of his last seven holes, including four straight from No. 14, to fire a 66 and vault into solo ninth at 212. Guido van der Valk also made up ground with a 69 to join Ira Alido and Elee Bisera in a tie for 10th at 214. Alido and Bisera both carded 71s. Although Mondilla has taken command, the tight leaderboard leaves little room for complacency. The pursuers have both the scoring ability and the opportunity to mount a final-round challenge, particularly on a course where momentum can shift quickly. The stakes are further heightened by the results of the tour’s last two stops, where the championships at Negros Occidental and Iloilo were both decided by a single stroke. Now, with Mondilla finally breaking clear after a tense exchange at the top, the stage is set for another nerve-racking finish. Bautista, Zaragosa, Jahns and Lumbo remain close enough to threaten, but the advantage belongs to Mondilla, whose clutch eagle has put him one composed round away from ending his title drought and reclaiming a place in the winner’s circle.
