LowKey Games Launches Free, Ad-Free Browser Games That Turn the Tree of Life Into a Daily Challenge

Oct 21, 2026

Seven games, 543 real species across 18 branches of the Tree of Life and 34 badges, free on any device with no ads, downloads or sign-up.

CORVALLIS, Ore., October 21, 2026 -- CRV Science today launched LowKey Games (games.crvscience.com), a free browser hub of biology and chess games. Under the banner "Play. Learn. Evolve.", it turns taxonomy, evolution and chess tactics into rounds that take 30 seconds to a few minutes, on phone, tablet or desktop.

Most science quiz sites lean on flashcards and trivia, and most brain-training apps sit behind a paywall. LowKey Games runs on active recall and real data instead. Every species carries its real scientific name (Genus species), its place in a real evolutionary lineage and anatomical clues grounded in current research.

Seven games at launch

  • PhyloClade: Tree of Life. The flagship. See an organism and its anatomical hallmark, then pick its closest evolutionary relative. Play Normal, 60-second Timed or Learning mode, in one broad group or all 18.
  • PhyloVersus: Triplet Duel. Three organisms enter; two are sister taxa. Spot the evolutionary outgroup across 10 rounds.
  • CladeSpeed: Kingdom Rush. A 30-second arcade sprint sorting organisms into vertebrates and invertebrates, with keyboard and screen-reader support.
  • Look-Alikes. Convergent evolution as a game: a shark beside a dolphin, a clubmoss beside a moss. Find the one that only looks related.
  • Where in the World? Tap where each species is native on a world map, and learn which pests people carried around the globe.
  • FoldLab: Protein Folding. Fold a chain of beads the way real proteins fold. Every level's best fold is proven by exhaustive computer search.
  • Chess Trainer: Best Move. Choose the best of three candidate moves in real positions, each rated Perfect, Good or Blunder by the Stockfish engine.

A Daily Challenge features one biology game each day, with the same puzzle for every player.

Built to teach, built to be checked

LowKey Games goes past the score screen. Every correct answer logs a species in the player's Field Guide, a searchable 543-species compendium with diagnostic traits, evolutionary relationships and full Linnaean taxonomy. Interactive cladograms map the shared derived traits behind each broad group and show where scientists still disagree.

Russia to host 2030 world weightlifting champs in Olympic federation first

PARIS, France — Moscow was announced Sunday as host of the 2030 world weightlifting championships, the sport's governing body becoming the first Olympic federation to hand Russia global staging rights since 2022. No world championships in an Olympic sport, summer or winter, have been held in Russia since the start of the war against Ukraine. The 2025 world swimming champs, initially attributed to the Russian city of Kazan, were moved to Singapore. "Concerning the IWF (Senior) World Championships in 2029, it will be staged in Ahmedabad (India), and Moscow (Russia) will host the 2030 edition," the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) said in a statement. IWF general secretary Jose Quinones added that "all the bids we received were excellent and we are sure that the championships in your respective countries will be a huge success". In a post on Telegram, Russian Weightlifting Federation president Aleksandr Vinokurov thanked the IWF "for their trust", with the 2030 world champs also serving as a qualifying event for the 2032 Olympic Games. "Russia has all the necessary experience and capabilities to host competitions of the highest level," he said. "Moscow has repeatedly staged major international sporting events and has modern infrastructure." The federation toasted its success in snagging the hosting rights. "The Russian Weightlifting Federation is the first Olympic sports federation to succeed in bringing a top-level official competition back to the country in many years," it said. The decision to name Moscow as the host is a ground-breaking one and comes in the wake of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announcing a pathway for Russian athletes to compete in international competition. A state-sponsored doping program implemented, according to the World Anti-Doping Agency, at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games, and the assault on Ukraine launched by President Vladimir Putin in 2022 resulted in Russians competing in various guises at international competition, most recently as Individual Neutral Athletes. However, on July 7 Russia came in from the cold when the IOC eased restrictions on Russian athletes and opened a pathway for them to compete in qualifying events for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. A furious Ukraine filed an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) requesting that the IOC decision be annulled.
