2017 report by the Cremation Association of North America shows that for the first time, more Americans are choosing cremation than burials. A second report from the National Funeral Directors Association showed that in 2018, cremations accounted for fifty percent of the overall death care disposition for Americans. This number is expected to reach eighty five percent by the year 2035. As the cost of traditional funerals increase every year, more Americans are choosing cremation over traditional burial for their death care needs.

Cremation can cost one third or less the price of a traditional funeral. Even a cremation with a full funeral service and or burial of an urn is much more cost effective than a traditional funeral with burial. The funeral directors who work with Martin Oaks Cemetery and Crematory, with facilities located in Lewisville, Texas and serving the residents of Dallas, Texas offer direct cremation packages starting at $695.00. A direct cremation is the most cost effective type of cremation. In a direct cremation, the body is cremated directly after death. After the family signs a cremation authorization form, a family typically must wait twenty-four hours for the cremation to be performed. No traditional funeral and pre-funeral events like a wake are arranged, because of this, families typically do not need to engage the service of a funeral home. They do not need to purchase a casket, because bodies are cremated in simple containers, and they do not need to embalm the body. Finally, they do not need to purchase a burial site. In many cities, a direct cremation can be performed for under one thousand dollars, and prices do vary. After a direct cremation is completed, families can hold a memorial service. Cremation also offers various options. A family may opt to hold a funeral service prior to cremation, offering families the convenience of a rental casket for the service. Bereaved families can save thousands of dollars by choosing cremation.

Religious acceptance is another factor why Americans are moving towards cremation. Religions that once viewed cremation as morally wrong have changed their views. For most of its history, the Catholic Church had vehemently opposed cremation. Those who participated or authorized a cremation of another Catholic faced excommunication. This changed in 1963, when the church lifted its ban on cremation. The Catholic church now considers it acceptable for a Catholic to be cremated but it still prefers burial. Protestants have remained neutral about cremation. Some Protestant denominations view it as an acceptable method of disposition but still prefer burial. Other denominations are against it. Judaism and Islam are still both opposed to cremation.

Cremations are viewed as more environmentally friendly than traditional funerals and burials. There are chemicals used in the embalming process and in the manufacturing of caskets. These chemicals can be harmful to the environment. Cremation require no harmful chemicals like those used in the embalming process. Cremation with scattering is even less wasteful: no casket or space in the ground is required. There are other elements to cremation, beginning with the use of Eco-friendly caskets that do not release harmful chemicals into the atmosphere during the cremation process. Cremated remains may be placed in urns made from materials that break down naturally in the earth or water, such as Himalayan rock salt or sustainably-produced handmade paper.

Cremation only refers to the manner in which families have chosen to deal with their loved one s physical remains. The funeral directors who work with Martin Oaks Cemetery and Crematory wants to let families know that cremation doesn t limit the ways they can honor their loved one s life.

First PH Olympian figure skater announces return to competition

Michael Christian Martinez, the country’s first Olympian figure skater, announced on Monday night that he is returning to active competition. “Anyway… I’m competing again. Good luck, knees,” Martinez said in a Facebook post. The 29-year-old Martinez said he will take part in the 2026 Philippine National Figure Skating Championships and hoped to return to international competition next year. “Honestly, I never thought I’d be making this announcement again. It’s been years since I last competed, and since then, life has changed a lot. I’ve been able to do other things, focus more on coaching, and help younger skaters with their own competitive journey,” he wrote. “But one thing I kept getting asked over the years was, When are you competing again? or Are you ever coming back? And my answer was always… probably not. But somehow people kept asking, and I guess a part of me also started wondering… why not? So after a lot of thinking and a lot of convincing (and by a lot, I really mean A LOT), I finally said yes. I’m competing again,” Martinez added. Martinez said he wanted to keep things simple and not try to recreate his days at the Olympics. “This time, I really just want to enjoy competing again. No big expectations, no unnecessary pressure. I’m also keeping things simple. Not trying to recreate my Olympic days. Just training, skating, competing, and hopefully having fun doing it again… Of course, I still have a few personal goals I want to accomplish. But we’ll get to those eventually. For now, I’m just happy to be back,” the two-time Olympian wrote. “I honestly don’t know how far this comeback will go, and maybe that’s what makes it exciting. One competition at a time. Let’s just see what happens. See you at Nationals,” he said. Martinez represented the Philippines in men’s figure skating at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia and also in the 2018 games in PyeongChang, South Korea. Following his Olympic stints, he has since become a content creator under the name MZ Viral. He suffered multiple injuries, hampering his training.
