Gandler still adjusting to Capital 1’s system

AFTER playing three official games with Capital 1, Vanie Gandler admits she is still struggling to get into the swings of things with her new team. Gandler, the 2026 All-Filipino Conference Most Valuable Player, signed with Capital 1 in the off-season after her old team Cignal left the league. Despite the lofty expectations, the 25-year-old gunner said she is still adjusting to the system under head coach Jorge Souza de Brito but is confident she can contribute to the team. “It's okay so far. I think I've seen so much progress with our connection throughout the games. I was struggling at the start, but we always make sure to communicate. I'm being patient with it,” said Gandler, who scored 10 points in a five-set victory over ZUS on Tuesday. “We're all being patient with our connection because we know that it's really a process and we can't force it,” she added. Gandler averaged 12.33 points in her first three games with Capital 1 which currently has a 2-1 win-loss record in the PVL All-Filipino Conference Siklab Series Gandler, however, is thrilled and grateful to have sophomore star Bella Belen by her side to take the load in scoring. “And of course, with regards to having Bella in the team, I'm very grateful of course that Bella's able to hold our ground while I'm still trying to find my rhythm,” Gandler said. “I'm still trying to find my role here in the team, but Bella's ever reliable so we're very grateful to have her.” Belen scored a career-high of 35 points in a win over Akari, followed by a huge 29-point outing against ZUS. Gandler, meanwhile, pointed out that all three games of Capital 1 in the tournament were 5-setters which helped build character for the team. “Yeah, I was talking to coach after the game and I was saying that it's good that our team is being exposed to these high-pressure moments this early on. Especially this early on in our journey together as this core. Of course, what's important is that we win,” she said. Capital 1 (2-1) looks to extend its winning streak to three when it faces winless PLDT (0-2) on Oct. 24 at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.

Edwards, Timberwolves spoil Giannis’ Heat debut

LOS ANGELES — Minnesota star Anthony Edwards erupted for 45 points as the Timberwolves spoiled two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Miami Heat debut with a 131-106 triumph on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila). Edwards, teaming seamlessly with new arrival LaMelo Ball, added 10 rebounds and three assists. He had nine of the Timberwolves’ 21 three-pointers while Ball, who joined from Charlotte this season, drilled five treys on the way to 21 points. “At this point, me and him are gonna be like best friends,” Edwards told ESPN in an on-court interview before exchanging a beaming hug with Ball. Antetokounmpo, the former Bucks talisman who captured one championship and two Most Valuable Player awards in his 13-year tenure in Milwaukee, looked the part, connecting on 13 of 19 attempts from the floor on the way to 35 points with six rebounds. But the Heat as a whole — widely tipped as Eastern Conference contenders after landing Antetokounmpo — had no answer for the Timberwolves. “We’re going to have to step up our defense,” said Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, who added Miami’s offense “did not look like us.” The second night of the new season featured an array of familiar faces in new places. In Washington, Anthony Davis made his Wizards debut nine months after he was acquired from Dallas in a blockbuster trade and spearheaded a 128-118 victory over the Bucks. Now recovered from hand and groin injuries, Davis scored 34 points and pulled down 12 rebounds drawing chants of “MVP!” from Wizards fans who suffered through the team’s league-worst 17-65 campaign last season and saw top draft pick AJ Dybantsa suffer an ankle injury in the team’s pre-season finale. Trae Young, who was also acquired by Washington last season but played just five games for them because of injury, added 20 points and 13 assists in the Wizards’ first season-opening win since 2022. Tyler Herro, acquired in the trade that sent Antetokounmpo to Miami, led the Bucks with 24 points and Jaime Jaquez Jr., who arrived in the same deal, added 22. It was back to the future in Toronto, where the Raptors welcomed the return of Kawhi Leonard with a 135-92 blowout of the Chicago Bulls. Leonard, who led Raptors to their first NBA title in 2019, is back after a trade from the LA Clippers — a deal delayed by a league probe that found the Clippers and Leonard violated salary-cap circumvention rules, leading to stiff sanctions for the club. Leonard made five of 17 of his shot attempts but made all 11 of his free throws on the way to 23 points. Scottie Barnes and Immanuel Quickley also scored 23 points each for the Raptors, who led by as many as 48 points in the wire-to-wire triumph. Triumphant Haliburton return Indiana guard Tyrese Haliburton, playing his first game since he tore his right Achilles tendon in Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals, scored 13 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter and added 12 assists as the Pacers edged the Pelicans 123-120 in New Orleans. Haliburton, who put the Pacers ahead for good with a driving basket with 1:23 to play, was overcome with emotion in an on-court postgame interview. “It means a lot to be back out here,” he said, wiping away tears. Dallas guard Kyrie Irving, playing his first game in more than 19 months after recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, scored 15 points for the Mavericks in a 128-110 loss to the Houston Rockets — who had 30 points apiece from Kevin Durant and Jabari Smith Jr. AFP

Reese shines again as Dream take 2-1 lead

LOS ANGELES — Angel Reese produced another dominant all-round display as the Atlanta Dream routed the Golden State Valkyries, 97-71, to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven WNBA Finals on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila). Three-time WNBA All-Star and reigning defensive player of the year Reese followed up her 30-point display in Game 2 on Monday to once again lead the Atlanta scoring with 21 points. The 24-year-old also reigned on the defensive end, finishing with 12 rebounds and three steals to neutralize Golden State’s offense. Reese was one of five Dream players to finish in double-figures, with Rhyne Howard adding 16 points and Naz Hillmon 15 points. Gabby Williams led Golden State’s scoring with 15 points. “We feel good — we’re still pissed that we lost the first game,” Reese said afterwards. “We know how good we are; we know our identity. “We’re all happy for sure, but it’s going to take more. The job is not finished so we’re going to keep going,” added Reese, who is the only woman in history to record consecutive double-doubles in her first three WNBA Finals games. “It feels good when you’re in the finals — when you can do it at the highest level, this is what I live for,” Reese said. Earlier, Reese picked up where she left off in game two, draining a three-pointer to help Atlanta take a 22-12 lead as the first quarter drew to a close. Golden State narrowed the deficit to six points at half-time and drew level at 48-48 early in the third quarter. But Atlanta responded with an 8-0 run to pull clear again, and took a stranglehold on the contest after outscoring Golden State 25-17 in the third to lead by 14 points heading into the final period. Atlanta stretched the lead to 21 points late in the fourth quarter to all but ice the contest and the points kept flowing as the Dream delivered a statement victory. Game 4 takes place in Atlanta on Saturday. Both teams are chasing a first WNBA title. The Dream have come up empty in three prior trips to the Finals, most recently in 2013. The Valkyries, who last year became the first WNBA expansion franchise to reach the playoffs in their inaugural season, are now contending for the title in their second. AFP WASHINGTON — Two relatively low-spending clubs each seeking a first Major League Baseball crown, the Tampa Bay Rays and Milwaukee Brewers, meet in a symbolic showdown when the 122nd World Series begins on Friday (Saturday in Manila). The best-of-seven championship matchup between frugal teams flies in the face of claims only big-spending teams can win the World Series. MLB’s collective bargaining agreement with its’ players union expires on Dec. 1 with many expecting a lockout over owners’ desire for a salary cap and the players’ refusal to consider it. Big spenders like the Los Angeles Dodgers, 2024 and 2025 champions, were seen as overpowering small-market foes with a cap needed to create parity. However, the Dodgers, with a $338 million payroll, were swept by the Brewers, with a payroll of $143.5 million, in the National League Championship Series. They play for the crown against a Rays side that spent $98.3 million on salaries and also took down the big-spending New York Yankees on their way to the Fall Classic. They will have the lowest-ranked payrolls of any World Series since the work stoppage that wiped out the 1994 World Series. It shows well-run clubs with less money can succeed against richer rivals just as the issue is set to ignite off-season disputes and a possible shutdown. On the field, baseball fans will be treated to a showdown with two teams seeking a first World Series title. The only other time that has happened in the past century was in 1980 when Philadelphia beat Kansas City. Tampa Bay, founded in 1998, lost the World Series to Philadelphia in 2008 before being pipped by the Dodgers in 2020. The Brewers, founded in 1969 as the Seattle Pilots before moving to Milwaukee the following year, reached their only prior World Series in 1982, losing to St. Louis in seven games. After 44 years, Milwaukee fans are excited to host Friday’s World Series opener. “The city is ready,” Brewers first baseman Jake Bauers said. “I know the fans are ready and I know we’ll be ready.” Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy said his players feed off supporters’ passion. “Those fans, they’re passionate. They wanted this and our players sensed how bad they wanted it,” Murphy said. “That gives them energy and motivation. It makes a difference.” The Brewers, who led MLB with a club-record 103 wins this season, and Rays, who led the American League with 97 wins, have key players who began their MLB careers on the opposite team. Tampa Bay’s Freddy Peralta, Most Valuable Player of the American League Championship Series, pitched for Milwaukee for eight years until being traded in January to the New York Mets, who traded him to the Rays in August. “Milwaukee is the team and the city that gave me the opportunity to make my dreams,” Peralta said. “Milwaukee is going to be always in my heart, but it’s time now to compete.” Bauers, this year’s NLCS MVP, made his MLB debut in 2018 with the Rays but is in his third season with the Brewers. Rays star pitcher Drew Rasmussen made his MLB debut with Milwaukee in 2020 before being traded to Tampa Bay in 2021. AFP
