PH hosts U18 Men's Softball Asia Cup for the first time

Philippine softball is set to make history in December. For the first time, the Philippines will host the Under-18 Men's Softball Asia Cup in Clark, Pampanga. The Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines (Asa-Phil) promises to leave no stones unturned for the success of the tournament featuring Asia's top young softball players. The hosting of the games also signals a major milestone for the sport and reinforcing the country's growing presence in the international softball community. The tournament reflects years of efforts by Asa-Phil and softball biggest benefactor, Cebuana Lhuillier Sports, in strengthening grassroots programs, developing athletes, and creating more opportunities for young Filipinos to compete at a higher level. More than an international competition, the Under-18 Men's Softball Asia Cup represents how far Philippine softball has come and the opportunities that lie ahead for the next generation. Asa-Phil president Jean Henri Lhuillier emphasized the significance of hosting the tournament in the country. "For many years, our athletes traveled abroad to compete against the best in the region. This December, we will welcome Asia's rising softball stars to the Philippines. That is a significant moment for Philippine softball," said Lhuillier, who is also president and CEO of Cebuana Lhuillier. "It gives our athletes the chance to compete on home soil, inspires the next generation, and allows us to showcase the Philippines as a destination capable of hosting international sporting events." The event also builds on Asa-Phil's continuing efforts to expand softball development across in the countryside. Through initiatives such as the annual National Championship, Asa-Phil has established competitive pathways for softball players nationwide. This year, Asa-Phil is strengthening those efforts further by bringing competitions closer to communities through regional tournaments, allowing more young players from the provinces to participate, develop their skills, and gain greater exposure. Competition will be fierce, with the Under-18 Men's Softball Asia Cup serving as a qualifier for the 2027 WBSC Under-18 Men's Softball World Cup. Participating teams will compete not only for continental honors, but also for the opportunity to secure a place at the sport's premier global youth championship. Beyond the field, the tournament is expected to bring together athletes, coaches, officials, families, and supporters from across Asia, creating opportunities to promote sports tourism, showcase Clark as a destination for international events, and highlight the Philippines' ability to host world-class sporting competitions. As the Philippines prepares to welcome Asia this December, the Under-18 Men's Softball Asia Cup stands as more than a championship. It is a testament to the growth of Philippine softball, a stage for the next generation of athletes, and an opportunity to put the country in the regional spotlight.

PSC Chairman’s Cup backs grassroots golf

The Philippine Sports Commission and the National Golf Association of the Philippines will stage the PSC Chairman’s Cup on Oct. 9 at the Luisita Golf and Country Club in Tarlac to rally support for the Fairway to the Future grassroots golf program. More than 100 golfers from government agencies, private sector partners and the media are expected to join the tournament, which begins with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Registration opens at 6 a.m. PSC Chairman Patrick “Pato” Gregorio initiated Fairway to the Future in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to strengthen government support for grassroots sports. The program seeks to provide free golf lessons and access to training facilities for qualified underprivileged children across the country, with priority potentially given to children and dependents of caddies and club employees. “We believe golf talents can be found all over the country, and through this program, we might discover a diamond in the rough who can become a champion,” Gregorio said. The Chairman’s Cup will use a four-person scramble format, with each team selecting its preferred shot and all four members playing from that position until the ball is holed. Scores will be converted into Molave points: six for an albatross, five for an eagle, four for a birdie, three for par, two for a bogey and one for a double bogey. Triple bogey or worse earns no points. The highest total over 18 holes wins. The Juniors division will recognize the champion, first runner-up and second runner-up teams. The Government Partners, Private Partners, Media and PSC–POC divisions will each award their champion and first runner-up teams. Special hole awards will also be presented for the most accurate drive and longest drive on Hole 1, and nearest the pin and hole-in-one on Hole 13. Fairway to the Future targets golfers aged 18 and below, including children of caddies, greenskeepers and club employees, public school students, out-of-school youth and young players from provincial communities. It envisions community and school-based instruction, standardized coaching, regional training centers and a structured competition pathway. Under the proposed framework, participating facilities will provide designated practice areas free of charge and waive green fees for registered juniors during prescribed hours. “We intend to expand our partnerships as we continue the program. Hopefully, more stakeholders will join us in providing opportunities for our children,” Gregorio said.

Former Spurs defender seeks FIFA presidency

Paris, France — Former Tottenham defender Ramon Vega has become the first person to announce he intends to run against incumbent Gianni Infantino in the FIFA presidential election next year. The 55-year-old former Switzerland centre-back has been working in finance since he retired in 2004. It is not the first time, though, that Vega has announced his intention to run for the top job at world football's governing body. He had considered running against Infantino following the resignation of Sepp Blatter in the wake of a corruption scandal in 2015. And he tried to challenge his fellow Swiss in 2022, but failed to garner sufficient support to make it onto the ballot. "The situation has evolved a lot since then," Vega told AFP, adding FIFA's member associations were "much more open to change" than when he previously sought to stand. "I am standing because my life has prepared me to serve the game," Vega added in an 11-page dossier announcing his candidacy. "I believe I have a duty and a social responsibility to protect and defend football -- its integrity, its people and its future." Pressure has been building on Infantino, who has lost the support of numerous FIFA member associations, since his aborted plan to create a commercial subsidiary to run FIFA's biggest events, such as the World Cup and Club World Cup. Last week, the Swiss Football Association became the latest to withdraw its support for Infantino, citing concerns over his record on transparency, accountability and institutional responsibility. "Faith and trust across the football family have been deeply damaged," said Vega in his dossier. "We must rebuild both, restore FIFA's credibility and reunite the global football family." It is not clear whether Vega would be able to stand. He must first gain the backing of at least five of FIFA's 211 member federations, but also be proposed by one of those. And the rules stipulate a candidate must have been involved in football for two of the previous five years, and pass an eligibility review. Potential candidates have until November 18 to meet those criteria. obo/bc/iwd TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR
