A heat pipe is a closed evaporator-condenser system consisting of a sealed, hollow tube whose inside walls are lined with a capillary structure or wick. Thermodynamic working fluid, with substantial vapor pressure at the desired operating temperature, saturates the pores of the wick in a state of equilibrium between liquid and vapor. When heat is applied to the heat pipe, the liquid in the wick heats and evaporates. As the evaporating fluid fills the heat pipe hollow center, it diffuses throughout its length. Condensation of the vapor occurs wherever the temperature is even slightly below that of the evaporation area. As it condenses, the vapor gives up the heat it acquired during evaporation. This effective high thermal conductance helps maintain near constant temperatures along the entire length of the pipe.

MANILA, Philippines — The Ladies Philippine Golf Tour’s top guns plunge into an early test of skill, patience and stamina Wednesday (Sept. 23) as the Kenda Tires TLPGA Open gets under way, with the Filipina campaigners facing a strong cast of Taiwan LPGA Tour stars in Taichung. The 54-hole championship, carrying a total purse of NT$4 million, marks another significant step in the LPGT’s growing presence on the international circuit, this being a co-sanctioned tournament with TLPGA, with 20 LPGT players set to challenge the hosts and other foreign contenders at the Taichung International Golf Club. And with the tournament moving to Taichung for the first time after previous TLPGA-LPGT co-sanctioned stops in other Taiwan cities, the LPGT delegation sees an opportunity to make an early impact – and perhaps produce another overseas victory. Leading the Philippine charge is two-leg LPGT winner Yvon Bisera, who opens against Taiwan standouts Ling Jie Chen and Chieh Ning Hung at 8:10 a.m. on No. 10. Bisera, who captured the Thailand Ladies Masters last year for her first international title, believes the course’s combination of narrow fairways, uneven lies and undulating greens will reward precision more than power. “Sobrang init, para din lang sa Pilipinas,” said Bisera, who played the course for the second time during Tuesday’s pro-am. “The course has a combination of hilly and flat features. Uneven ang lies, but the trickiest part is really the greens – some are uphill, some are downhill.” The East and Center nines of the 27-hole layout will be used for the championship, with the sloping terrain and several narrow fairways putting a premium on accurate driving and well-placed approaches. Bisera found the greens particularly demanding but saw some encouragement in the relatively open layout. “Medyo mahirap ‘yung greens, but the course layout is a bit open, so mas okay,” she said. She also stressed the importance of finding the fairway, especially on the dogleg holes where a good drive can dramatically shorten the approach. “When you hit your tee shot perfectly, medyo malapit na ang second shot, especially on the dogleg holes,” said Bisera. She knows, however, that good ball-striking alone will not be enough. With temperatures expected to remain high throughout the week, endurance and proper hydration could become just as important as putting together three solid rounds. “I would do my best and give my all for this tournament,” said Bisera, who will be hoping to add another international title to her growing résumé. Fellow ICTSI-backed ace Mafy Singson likewise expects a demanding battle, drawing Chun Wei Wu and I-Wen Chen at 8:30 a.m. on the frontside. Singson described the layout as relatively flat but said the small, heavily undulating greens could provide the biggest challenge. “The course is relatively flat, but the greens are a little hilly, very undulating and small,” said Singson. That makes approach shots and recovery play especially important, with players forced to think carefully about where to attack and where to miss. “I wouldn’t say it’s that difficult, but I wouldn’t say it’s that easy either,” Singson said. “The greens are pretty tricky, and I think the approach shots will also be important.” She added: “We’d have to do well around the greens and know where to miss.” Singson also cautioned against wayward drives, with the thick rough likely to make recovery difficult. “The long game is important, of course – putting our drives in the fairway and not missing them because the rough is pretty thick,” she said. “So it’s the long game, approach shots and mostly the short game.” Like Bisera, Singson is keeping her focus on execution rather than expectations. “I hope to do well. Everyone wants to do well this week,” she said. “I just plan to do my best and hopefully finish well.” Princess Superal provides another major threat from the LPGT side, with the 2022 Asia-Pacific Cup champion opening against Thai ace Nook Sukapan and local standout Jo Hua Hung at 8 a.m. on No. 1. With Bisera, Singson and Superal leading a deep Philippine contingent, the visitors have enough experience and international exposure to challenge the home players on a layout where patience and consistency could prove decisive. The contingent also includes Korean LPGT mainstays Jiwon Lee, Kim Seoyun and Eunhua Nam, each capable of making a strong run, while amateurs Isabella Tabanas and twins Mona and Lisa Sarines add youth and unpredictability to the Philippine side. Rounding out the field are Marvi Monsalve, Sarah Ababa, Harmie Constantino, Kayla Nocum, Lois Kaye Go, Chihiro Ikeda, Velinda Castil, Kristine Fleetwood, Rev Alcantara, Monica Mandario and Gretchen Villacencio. MANILA, Philippines – Fourteen years of waiting have brought Art Arbole to a place he has long dreamed of reaching: the top of a Philippine Golf Tour leaderboard with a championship within sight. Arbole took a major step toward ending that long title drought Tuesday, producing a personal-best 36-hole total and a bogey-free 67 to seize solo control at the halfway mark of the ICTSI Negros Occidental Classic at the Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club. For the second straight day, the short but tricky layout yielded to Arbole’s steady all-around game. More importantly, the performance gave the journeyman his first outright lead after two rounds – a position that carried both promise and pressure as the tournament heads into the pivotal final 36 holes. “This is the first time that I was able to lead in two days. My game continues to come together – driving, irons and putting,” said Arbole, his eyes betraying the excitement of a player who knows how close he is to a long-awaited breakthrough. “I just need to stay focused day-to-day. Basta mag-connect lang lahat,” added Arbole, who overcame a double bogey in the opening round with an eagle and five birdies to share the lead with Jhonnel Ababa at 65. Now, with two rounds still to play, Arbole is refusing to look beyond the next shot. “Hanggang Thursday na lang. Starting on No. 10, Ababa parred his first eight holes before dropping a stroke on No. 18 for the second straight day. Still, the former Order of Merit winner remains firmly in the hunt as he tries to add another title to his résumé after edging Guido van der Valk in a sudden-death playoff at Apo in 2024. Only one stroke separates the top two, while Jeffren Lumbo lurks three shots behind Arbole at 135. Lumbo erased the bitter memory of a triple-bogey 8 on No. 18 that marred his otherwise impressive opening-round 68, firing another 67 highlighted by four straight birdies from No. 4. He is tied with van der Valk, who also carded a three-under card in another scorching day. Lumbo is chasing a second PGT title after breaking through at South Pacific last year, while van der Valk is likewise looking to snap a lengthy title drought. MANILA, Philippines — Filipino Olympic bronze medalist Aira Villegas made a quick exit in the 20th Asian Games after suffering a unanimous decision (0-5) loss to Indian Sakshi Chaudhary in the women's 51kg round of 32 at the Nishio Gymnasium in Japan Tuesday. Villegas, who served as a co-flag bearer during the meet's opening ceremony, couldn't get going as Chaudhary dominated. Villegas' loss dealt a huge blow to the Philippine campaign as she was one of the favorites to make a podium finish in the continental meet.

Sanchez, White enter 100m freestyle final; Chua to 200m back medal round

MANILA, Philippines — Filipino tankers Kayla Sanchez and Heather White advanced to the 20th Asian Games women's 100m freestyle final at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre in Japan Tuesday. Sanchez placed second in the heats with 54.22 seconds while White earned the 10th and last spot with 55.82 to make the medal round set at 4 p.m. later. Meanwhile, Xiandi Chua advanced to the women's 200m final after finishing eighth in the preliminaries with 2:14.87. The final is set for 4:20 p.m. In the men's side, Gian Santos splashed his way to the final of the 400m individual medley, placing eighth in the heats with 4:24.25 seconds. Santos competes for the medal at 4:08 p.m.
