Calgary, Canada - May 7, 2019 /PressCable/ —
Essential Property Maintenance has announced a full range of lawn care services that will be available to their customers this season.
After all, warmer weather, seasonal fruit, and the smell of a freshly mowed lawn under a golden sunset – these are just some of the things that characterize the coming of spring.
But, with the snow finally melted away, you may feel a little dismayed by the state of your lawn.
How can you practice the best lawn care in Calgary in order to achieve a beautiful lush lawn in spring?
Essential Property Management has compiled a list of 5 tips to help you exercise the best lawn care services in Calgary.
Tip #1: Let Your Lawn Breathe
Piles of snow on your lawn over the winter months result in the soil becoming highly compact, which prevents air from circulating within it.
A lawn that is unable to breathe is unable to grow.
The first thing you will want to do is to create some much-needed air holes to wake your lawn up from hibernation.
The great thing about aeration is that it also creates spaces for you to plant new grass seeds (more on that later).
There are two types of aerators – spike and plug.
Plug aerators are ideal since they create a larger hole which promotes higher air flow.
However, since plug aerators have a large protrusion to push into the lawn they are usually much heavier and require towing.
If you prefer to push your aerator by hand, a spike aerator is much lighter and does a great job.
Tip #2: Mow On The Lowest Setting.
For your first spring mowing session, you will want to set the mower to the lowest setting in order to get enough sunlight onto the soil.
After this initial exposure to the sun, you will need to allow your lawn to grow in order to retain soil moisture and prevent grass roots from burning.
With every successive mowing session, raise the height of your mower slightly until you reach a final height of about 3 inches.
Before you begin mowing, make sure you sharpen your mower blades in order to achieve a clean cut rather than a tear.
Tip #3: Raise Lawn PH Levels
The flow of water from rain and melting snow usually results in essential nutrients being washed away.
After your soil has been aerated you will need to test its PH levels. You can purchase a relatively cheap PH testing kit from your local hardware store
The ideal PH level is around 7. Soil that is too acidic will not yield grass growth.
If you find that you need to lessen the acidity of your soil, this can be achieved with the addition of lime.
Lime based stabilizers are also available at your local hardware store.
Tip #4: Reseed.
After mowing your lawn you may notice balding areas. You will need to reseed them.
Reseeding is not only limited to the balding areas of your lawn – you can reseed your entire lawn, if you wish.
Before reseeding you will need to add a thin layer of topsoil (about ¼ inches).
Just be sure to keep an eye out for birds that may eat the seeds before they have a chance to sprout!
Tip #5: Water Regularly.
In order to see the fruit of your hard labor, you will need to water your grass regularly.
Water your lawn 3 times a week, early in the mornings. If the weather is particularly dry and hot during a certain week, you may need to water it daily.
Aim for about an inch of watering every week.
Place a measuring cup in the path of your watering device to monitor the amount of water you have provided – aim to fill the cup about ⅓ inch every session.
Does this all sound like too much work? Would rather have professionals take care of your lawn for you?
