(PRUnderground) November 8th, 2022

  1. STAT OF THE WEEK: Amazon has over a thousand Rivian electric vans making deliveries in the U.S. They’ve delivered over 5M packages in nearly 100 U.S. cities since launching in July. – According to The Verge
  2. Disney+ announced the launch of a new test that will allow subscribers to shop exclusive merchandise from their brands directly from the detail pages of select movies, series, and shorts on the streaming service. Subscribers will hold up their phone to the TV screen to scan QR codes that will bring them to a website on their phone to view and purchase the merchandise. Users will be required to login to the e-commerce platform using their Disney+ credentials, which means that for the time being, the merchandise will be exclusive to Disney+ subscribers only.
  3. Google is building package tracking right into your Gmail Inbox so that you don’t have to open a “your item has shipped” email or click on a tracking link to find out the estimated delivery date. Gmail will show you the delivery date on the list item for any shipping e-mail from within the Inbox view, and a card with more detailed info if you open the e-mails. Similar to how they display Calendar invites and travel itineraries above the e-mail itself. Here’s the big catch though… The feature will work with most major U.S. shipping carriers EXCEPT… Amazon! Amazon’s shipment notification e-mails don’t include tracking information or even tell you what products have shipped, likely because Amazon doesn’t want Google to be able to track what you bought from it and use that info for advertising.
  4. BigCommerce and Snapchat have launched a new app together that enables U.S. merchants to integrate their store and sync their product catalogs. The new app will allow BigCommerce merchants to create shopping ad campaigns on Snapchat from within their BigCommerce dashboards using Snap’s made-for-ecommerce ad formats. After installing the app, merchants can use the Snap Pixel to track conversions and view, analyze, and edit campaigns.
  5. Shopify shut down Exchange Marketplace, its platform for buying and selling Shopify stores, on Nov 1st. Shopify merchants who want to sell their stores will now have to use other marketplaces such as Flippa or Empire Flippers, or sell their store to an aggregator like Open Store or Foundry. Shopify did not offer a reason for why it shut down the exchange. Maybe they accidentally fired all the people who ran it.
  6. A few week’s ago I reported on EU’s new Digital Services Act, an online safety-focused overhaul of e-commerce rules, and the first major update to the legal framework for digital services since the year 2000. The EU also recently launched the Digital Markets Act, with a goal of requiring companies such as Apple and Google to offer alternatives to allow third-party app stores on its platforms and alternative payment systems. The Digital Markets Act entered into effect on November 1 and will be applicable on May 2, 2023.
  7. WhatsApp launched Communities, a new feature that offers larger and more structured discussion groups. Previously, WhatsApp only offered group chats, which got a bit cumbersome to keep up with as they grew. While some features of Communities are comparable to those of Facebook Groups, the latter is designed to connect strangers who share a common interest, whereas the former is meant to be used by members who are already connected in the real world. Also unlike Facebook Groups, which are discoverable on the platform, WhatsApp Communities are hidden. There will not be a search and discovery feature available. Users will have to be invited to join a Community.
  8. Despite record funding and patronage during the pandemic, many e-commerce brands are at risk now that consumers have returned to stores, and that consumer spending in general is down. Inflationary and volatile economic environments have impacted both brands and consumers, as businesses have had to increase prices to improve their button line. Krista Morgan, general partner of Stage, a female-led private equity group that acquires controlling interest in early-stage companies, outlined some of the risks that brands are facing in a recent interview with Forbes, which I highlighted in the newsletter.
  9. Consumer habits in Latin America changed drastically during the pandemic, possibly more than any other region. Out of necessity, people became e-commerce shoppers for the first time and started buying essentials like groceries, household goods, and apparel online. I can attest! I spend most of the year in Tena, Ecuador (in the heart of the Amazon jungle) and have seen the rise of e-commerce adoption first hand in Ecuador during the past couple years. Practical Ecommerce shared some insights into how Latin America is one of the most rapidly growing e-commerce markets in the world.
  10. Shopify has begun unifying its fulfillment network with Deliverr, President Harley Finkelstein said on a Q3 earnings call last week. The process is expected to be completed in Q1.
  11. The USPS revealed that they are monitoring social media to measure custom satisfaction by zip code via a heatmap that geographically displays comments left on their Facebook and Twitter accounts and on online review sites. With the help of the map, a South Florida district observed a 31% reduction in “where is my package?” complaints, a 51% reduction in Certified Mail exceptions, and an 85% drop in “where is my mail?” concerns.
  12. Tock, a Squarespace company that allows guests to discover and book culinary experiences at restaurants, bars, wineries, pop-ups, and events, launched its own e-commerce platform, Tock Wine Shop, which enables winery partners to sell directly to consumers while continuing to manage tasting reservations on its all-in-one platform. The shop is launching with an initial collection of thirty wineries, with hundreds more to come.
  13. Retail Federation (NRF) reported that last year’s holiday sales grew 13.5% over 2020 and forecast this year’s sales will grow between 6% and 8% over 2021. Online and other non-store sales, which are included in the total, are expected to increase between 10% and 12%.
  14. Udaan, a Bengaluru-headquartered startup that helps merchants secure inventory and working capital, laid off 350 employees as part of cost-cutting measures and to tackle redundancies in certain roles, as part of their journey to become profitable. Last week I reported that the company raised $120M in convertible notes and debt and hopes to be ready for the public markets in 12-18 months.
  15. Jumia, an African e-commerce Amazon-like marketplace, saw its co-founders Jeremy Hodara and Sacha Poignonnec step down as co-CEOs. Francis Dufay, who previously held the CEO role at Ivory Coast will replace both co-founders as acting CEO. When Jo Bennett found out there were co-CEOs, she said, “Two guys doing one job? We’ve got to do something about that. This is knucklehead talk. I’m not going to bite it. You can’t give me gravy and tell me it’s jelly ’cause gravy ain’t sweet!”
  16. Amazon Prime Video launched a new mobile-only plan for users in India for Rs 89 ($1.09) a month billed annually. The mobile plan will compete against similar subscriptions offered by competitors like Disney+, Hotstar, and Netflix.
  17. FedEx owned ShopRunner, a platform that connects consumers with more than 100 retailers and brands and offers an Amazon Prime-like shipping incentive, launched a new app designed to simplify online shopping. The app allows users to discover new brands and connect with retailers through a single feed that can be optimized through their browsing and purchase history. Users can also purchase, ship, track, and return items directly through the app.
  18. Splitit partnered with Checkout.com to offer their BNPL services through the platform. The partnership will see Checkout.com’s merchants and marketplace adopt Splitit’s Installment-as-a-Service platform, which debuted in May.
  19. Substack launched Substack Chat, a new feature that allows writers to communicate directly with their most avid and loyal readers within the mobile app. With the new chat feature, Substack is taking on Twitter, Discord, Slack, and Telegram by eliminating the need for its writers to “frankenstain together different software tools and cross-reference subscriber lists.”
  20. Instagram will soon have NFT creation and trading tools built in, but in-app purchases will be “subject to applicable app store fees.” At launch, Instagram will use the Polygon blockchain for NFT minting and pull NFT metadata from OpenSea.
  21. Apple is now worth $2.307T, more than Alphabet ($1.126T), Amazon ($940B), and Meta ($240B) combined.
  22. Mastodon, a free and open source decentralized social network that launched in 2016, gained more than 230k new sign-ups since Oct 27, the day Musk took over Twitter. From what I saw, it’s currently mostly just a mix of posts from users about being new to Mastodon, comparing it to Twitter, introducing themselves to no-one, and patting themselves on the back for not being on Twitter. Then they’ve returned to Twitter to talk about how they’re on Mastodon because they just “cannot with Twitter anymore!”
  23. Benitago Group, an FBA aggregator, confirmed that it is NOT shutting down its operations or selling its assets, despite rumors. The company is merely laying off some employees as it shifts gears toward brand incubation and operations.
  24. The online banking company Chime also laid off 12% of its employees last week, or about 160 jobs, blaming current marketing conditions. Chime makes money by earning a fee from payment processors like Visa every time a customer uses a Chime debit or credit card and was valued at $25B after a funding round in August last year.
  25. Stripe has launched in Thailand, continuing its goal of expanding into the Asia Pacific region where it spotted demand for its payment tech. The expansion comes in the week that the company fired about 1,000 workers, and after seeing its valuation fall about 27% to $74B this year.
  26. PayPal announced during an earnings call that 25M consumers are now using its BNPL option, equating to 150M loans over 2.2M unique merchants, with nearly $5B in Q3 volume, up 157% YoY. Meanwhile at Block, BNPL through its acquired Afterpay contributed to $150M of gross profit, split across Square and Cash App, with GMV in Q3 to the tune of $5.4B.
  27. Amazon will be freezing their recruitment plans for its corporate sectors. No specific dates were given regarding how long, but the announcement said that the hiring freeze will last for a few months.
  28. New Zealand proposed new BNPL regulation, such as requiring providers to carry out affordability checks for purchases above NZ$600 ($424), as the country has seen BNPL spending increase from NZ$755M in 2020 to NZ$1.7B in 2021. Government officials will collect feedback for the proposed rules and roll out final regulations next year.
  29. Drizly, the Uber owned on-demand alcohol delivery platform, announced a new brand direction. It will head in the direction of an e-commerce resource for any occasion with a focus on gift giving. The overhaul comes just a little over a year after Uber purchased the company for $1.1B.
  30. Plus 11 seed rounds, IPOs, and acquisitions of interest including Shopify’s acquisition of Remix.

Bartunkova stuns Sabalenka in China Open

Bartunkova stuns Sabalenka in China Open

BEIJING — Aryna Sabalenka was swatted aside in straight sets by 34th-ranked Nikola Bartunkova in the third round of the China Open on Sunday, leaving the event without its top two seeds. Czech player Bartunkova, 20, sent down four aces to beat the former world number one 6-4, 6-3 in one hour and 35 minutes. "I focused on myself, to be calm," Bartunkova said. "She's a legend... so I'm really happy that I won the match," she said of the four-time Grand Slam champion. Bartunkova next faces Austria's Sinja Kraus in the round of 16. Second-seeded Sabalenka squandered five chances to break serve in the sixth game of the first set, with Bartunkova strong on defence and firing deep. The 28-year-old from Belarus threw on a cap for the eighth game of the first set as the women switched between playing in the shade and the sun, but it did not turn the tide in her favour. A frustrated Sabalenka tossed her racquet at a break down in the fourth game of the second set, and lost on the first match point when she returned into the net. Top seed Elena Rybakina -- who weeks earlier replaced Sabalenka as World No. 1 -- was ousted by Alina Charaeva in the second round on Saturday. Top seed Alexander Zverev was scheduled to play Novak Djokovic later on Sunday in the quarterfinals of the men's 500-level event also taking place. The 39-year-old Serbian great enters the match with an extraordinary unbeaten streak in Beijing, but Zverev -- last month's US Open champion -- is in the running for the top men's ranking. AFP

Eala and her peers are in the ‘danger zone’

Eala and her peers are in the ‘danger zone’

I was not at all surprised that Alex Eala lost to Tatiana Prozorova at Singapore, and to Wang Xiyu at the Asian Games 2026 in Japan. I simply applied “Murphy’s Law” that states: "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong." And it did. Twice. While Eala was basking in the limelight and made to carry a big weight of the game on her shoulders at the WTA loved it, Prozorova was getting ready to upset her. And the Russian’s preparation may have included studying the numerous reels of Eala’s best plays, studying how she can beat the Filipina. For her part, Eala may have had no time to study Prozorova, or maybe somebody in her camp must have thought that since the Russian was ranked below the top 100 in the WTA rankings, Prozorova could be treated as a “gift” opponent. And the same scenario can apply when Eala faced Wang in Japan. Eala’s events to endear the fans also may have robbed her of precious time to get focused and put in more work in the gym and practice. Then there’s Eala’s need to compete in doubles events, just like in the 2026 Asian Games. Prozorova also fell victim to the need to compete in doubles, sustaining an injury that saw her exit Singapore for good. And the truth is - the tennis players ranked below the top 20 have more time to study the top 20 players. On the other hand, the top 20 players do not have time to identify the possible threats below the top 20 who can emerge as spoilers, like Prozorova. Eala herself was a spoiler before she made waves at Miami 2025, having been ranked at No. 140 in the WTA listing at that time. Now, Eala has entered the “danger” zone, where she now becomes a “target” of aspiring players below the top 20 or 100.  The top 10 players are also more aware of Eala’s prowess. Eala now has to face top 10 players more often, which is more challenging compared to facing unheralded opposition. That won’t be easy if you look at the records of Coco Gauff, Mira Andreeva, Linda Noskoiva, and Iva Jovic against top 10 players. Gauff has a 38-42 record against top 10 players, and holds a commanding 6-0 record against Andreeva. However, Gauff’s record against Swiatek is 5-11. Noskova’s record against the top 10 is 14-23, and is 1-6 against Swiatek and 0-3 against Elena Rybakina, the current No. 1. Andreeva is 11-14 against the top 10, while Eala is 9-4, and holds a 2-1 record against Swiatek, 2-0 versus Elina Svitolina, and 1-0 over Rybakina. Meanwhile, Jovic is 2-9 against the top 10. So, what can we expect from Eala from here? My answer: A more unpredictable path to reach the top 10, and that includes wins against top 20 and unheralded opponents, and losses against the top 20 and unheralded rivals. Also expect a higher level of burnout that also happens to the best, such as Swiatek whose fans at one point asked for more respect for her in the past months after the Polish sustained high-profile losses. The same should go for Eala. She still deserves respect. Because the truth is, Eala has faced higher level of competition this year, which is more taxing. And the sad fact is the lower-tier players always have the chance to beat top-tier players because the former have more time to rest and have time to study the moves of the top 20 players. Hence, let us rally behind Eala to keep swinging that racket, the same way Andreeva, Gauff, Noskova, and Jovic do. In fact, the five of them are already in the “danger zone.” But has Gauff slowed down because she is 5-11 against Swiatek? No.  Did Andreeva consider lying low because Gauff beat her six times? No.  Noskova bravely faced the top 10 even if that meant losing more matches to them. And will she buckle down? Not at all. And do you think Jovic is going to give up because she is 2-9 against the top 10? Definitely not. How about Eala? She will surely keep on fighting. Gauff, Andreeva, Noskova, Jovic, and our very own Eala demonstrate they have the fighting spirit that comes with entering the danger zone. They all deserve our respect.

Fernandes hails Portugal's 'greatest symbol' Ronaldo, calls for unity

PORTO, Portugal — Portugal playmaker Bruno Fernandes said Cristiano Ronaldo remains the country's greatest footballing icon despite walking out on the squad this week after finding out he would not start a match. The 41-year-old superstar said Wednesday he had left the team after coach Jorge Jesus said Ronaldo would not start against Denmark in the Nations League, a match Portugal won 4-2 without him. Former Real Madrid and Manchester United attacker Ronaldo's future with the national team, for whom he is the leading goalscorer and most capped player, is in doubt after his walk out. "Regarding Cristiano, I had a conversation with him, and what I told him, and what I repeat here, is this -- the most important thing is that, regardless of what happens, Cristiano Ronaldo will never cease to be the greatest symbol of our national team, of our football, and of the country, for what he has done not only in Portugal but throughout the world," Fernandes told reporters Saturday. Manchester United midfielder Fernandes called for unity after a tumultuous few days in which Portugal fans' opinions have been split over Ronaldo's decision. "He has a reserved place not only among the best of all time, but also in the hearts of all Portuguese people, and the most important thing is that we stop dividing things," said Fernandes. "There are no divisions in the national team, it is one and will remain so, despite any noise that may come from outside... "We are outside of this controversy, but what I ask is that the country does not divide itself, does not make choices, that it respects all sides, but, at the same time, Cris is and will be the biggest icon of our national team, he deserves everyone's respect, regardless of who likes him more or (who likes him) less." Portugal beat Norway and Denmark away from home without Ronaldo starting and face Norway again on Sunday. Coach Jesus said Ronaldo was a "symbol of Portugal" and said there would be time to speak about him after Sunday's game in Porto. "I'm going to focus on the team, on the opponent which is Norway, one of the five best teams in Europe. That's the problem right now," said the 72-year-old coach.

LeBron puts on a show in 76ers' scrimmage debut

LeBron puts on a show in 76ers' scrimmage debut

PHILADELPHIA — The 76ers' public address announcer ended a brief retirement over the summer in large part to get behind the mic and do what he did for the first time ahead of the team's annual scrimmage. Matt Cord introduced LeBron James in the Sixers' starting lineup. "At 6-9, from St. Vincent-St. Mary’s, No. 23, LeBron James! James!' Close to 10,000 fans who plunked down $10 a ticket on Saturday to essentially witness a glorified practice at the Sixers’ home arena went wild for James' debut. No, James didn't wear No. 23. He historically wore No. 6 over his career in practice gear but with that number retired in Philadelphia because of Julius Erving, James went with No. 9. No, the dunks and 3s and assists didn't count in any official capacity. And no, James wasn't even introduced last. That honor remained reserved for Joel Embiid. What the new 41-year-old on the block did do was give — along with Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown and VJ Edgecombe — a sneak preview that maybe, just maybe, the long underperforming Sixers might finally rise to the moment this season and meet their championship expectations. “It was a great first step in a direction we're trying to go,” James said. “It was great to hear some cheers from our fans.” Sixers fans that crammed aisles and stairways trying to catch a first glimpse or a snapshot of James were shooed back to their seats. Vendors hawked James merchandise outside the arena and told fans they could own the first pieces of his merchandise. Sixers fans that inched near the court screamed and outright begged James to stop and turnaround and pose for pictures. They also crammed into team stores buying No. 23 jerseys. The Sixers started the scrimmage early with what they hope is a familiar sight: Maxey in transition hit James for an alley-oop dunk. James hung and swung on the rim for a few seconds. James made a nifty behind-the-back pass to Edgecombe (who missed a corner 3) and even squared up and buried a long 3 from about Caitlin Clark range. James did it all — he even bounced Maxey's baby daughter, Marvel, on his knee for a moment on the bench. No word yet on James' hourly babysitting rate. Not a bad first week in Philadelphia for the NBA’s career scoring leader. “Everybody's been super welcoming,” James said. “I've been able to implement some things with my voice and just my command of how I play the game and my experience playing the game. I'm still getting more and more comfortable off the floor, with travel and without my family and things of that nature. That's going to be a little bit of a challenge, but everything's been good so far. Great first week." The Sixers traditionally hold the scrimmage in Delaware on the home court of their G League team. The Sixers donated 5,000 tickets to local community groups and Sixers Youth Foundation grantee partners and more than $80,000 was raised for the Sixers Youth Foundation. The $10 tickets were a deal. They are hovering around $1,000 a ticket for the 100 level on the secondary market for the Sixers' Oct. 22 home opener against Cleveland. James was expected to play Monday in the first of four preseason games and mark the start of his record 24th NBA season. “It’d be good to get out there with some of our guys to just get a rhythm," James said. “At the same time, also not overdo it. We're putting a lot into our practices right now. We're fine-tuning what we want to do once the game comes. I think there will be opportunities once we get out there in the preseason." Philadelphia opens the season Oct. 20 in New York against the NBA champion Knicks. James and the rest of the Sixers were encouraged that the oft-injured Embiid has been a full participant in camp and seems to be in leaner, lighter shape. Embiid pulled off a driving left-handed dunk in the scrimmage and later joked; it was “probably the last dunk of my career.” Jerseys flew off the racks, Sixers flew through the air, and excitement swirled around the team and for all that James brings to the city. “They've welcomed me with open arms,” James said, “and I'm getting more and more comfortable every day.”
